Douglas Mercer

Obituary of Douglas Murray Mercer

Doug was born in Sussex on March 25, 1964, a son of Clayton and Muriel (Roberts) Mercer and devoted husband of Teresa (Myers) Mercer. He and Teresa were truly soulmates in every sense of the word and they loved each other very deeply. Their family and friends sometimes thought they were like teenagers falling in love all over again. They never argued, they were always holding hands and they weren’t afraid to be affectionate. The love they shared was really one of a kind. Doug and Teresa raised 4 wonderful children whom they couldn’t be more proud of. Together with their grandchildren, Doug’s heart was full of joy. His granddaughters were the light in his eye and as a family, they shared many adventures over the years. Doug was a Driller at Vic Diamond Progressive for 10 years and his job was very important to him. He was one of the lucky ones who actually enjoyed going to work every day. For 14 years prior to this, Doug worked with Gulf Operators as a Rock Crusher. He played darts at the Norton Legion and was also a member of the KV Men’s League. Doug loved to spend time outdoors, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and four wheeling. He had a tradition of always being the last snowmobile in the group, on the trails. His friends tease that he stayed at the back because he didn’t want anybody to run over him, but the family all know that it was the protector in him who guarded each and every one of them as they journeyed. Doug also had a passion for sports cars and classic muscle cars and over the years owned many beauties. Never one to sit idle for long, Doug was always on the go. Whether, at work, on an escapade out in the woods with friends, family or best buddies Jimmy Hodgin and Clifford and Gordie Mercer, maybe showing his fine dance moves when socializing or as a talented “backyard mechanic” in the garage, working on one of his cars, Doug was happiest when getting things done. He loved his life, his family and his friends. Doug’s battle with cancer was brave. He never complained and always stayed positive and strong. Teresa took care of him every single day and never left him. They were partners until his illness separated them and on Saturday, December 10, 2016, Douglas Murray Mercer, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side. Along with his sweet Teresa and his parents Clayton and Muriel, Doug is survived by his children: Clayton (Christin Gray), Codie (Mitzi Floyd), Jesse and Bobbi-Jo (Thomas Dallon) all of Sussex; his brother Anthony (Gail) of Moosehorn Creek; his sisters: Debbie (Warren) McColeman of Keswick, ON and Judy Wilkins (Robert Doyle) of Saint John; his precious granddaughters: Nevaeh, Nova, Avaleigh and another little one expected in June of 2017; his father and mother-in-law Gerald and Patricia Myers of Norton; his brother-in-law Gerry Myers (Fonda Jones) of Kingston; best friends Gordie and Gail Mercer; his nieces and nephews Jerome (Stephanie), Sally, Jake, Andalia, Spencer, JR, Katelynn and Billy-Jo; his great nieces Joelle, Gabrielle and Autumn and many extended family members and friends.
