Obituary of Michael Charles Muscat

Michael was born August 4th, 1930 in Mosta a city on the Island of Malta in the Mediteranean Sea to the late Anthony and Margaret (Borg) Muscat. He worked alongside his father in the family butcher shop for a number of years before setting out across the ocean. In the 50’s he left Malta and ventured to Canada to explore a new chapter in his life. Around the same time, a brave young woman, who had been living in Moncton at the time, was persuaded by a friend to throw caution to the wind. Soon after, the two of them set out for Toronto. A short time after settling in, the gals found themselves at a local dance. As the story goes, these young ladies observed a very dapper, sharp dressed, young man saunter across the room in their direction. They thought, surely he would pass them by and visit with any one of the other young ladies who had taken notice to this dashing fellow. Much to her surprise, that fellow stopped to chat with Miss Cecilia McCollum. Before you knew it they were dancing and this story quickly turns to history. That night, Cecilia and Michael met the love of their lives and were eventually married. They had two wonderful children and their time in Toronto was full of happy memories. In 1975 they decided to head for Sussex for a change in pace of life. Cecilia had a brother who was ill in Moncton and there was more family in Saint John and Riverview. Michael went to work at the Irving Saw Mill and their home soon became the centre of the family. They shared many lovely meals over the years at their house and life in Sussex proved to be all that they could have wished for. Michael was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He lovingly cared for Cecilia’s mother for the three years she spent with them and he very genuinely adored his beautiful wife. He was an amazing father, grandfather and great grandfather and cherished each and every one of them. His only great grandchild, Mason, was that most recent light in his eye and Michael’s entire family knew how important they were to him. He was a determined and proud man and even though he would do anything to help his family or a friend in need, he didn’t like to be dependent on others. Later in his life, when he started to face serious mobility issues, he never gave up. This past year, with the help of his “legs” – AKA his daughter Kathy, he adapted so gracefully to all the changes in his life. He was even quite excited to show his son Brian what his new power wheel chair could do and jokingly said that he should get it all done up with racing stripes. Michael will be forever present in the hearts of his beloved family and will be deeply missed by his sweet Cecilia, his beloved wife of almost 60 years; his children: Kathy Habraken and her husband Anthony of Dutch Valley and Brian Muscat and his wife Anne of Barrie, ON; his brothers: Joe and wife Vicki and John and wife Palma, both of Mississauga, ON; his grandsons: Jordan, Joshua, Kyle, Drew and Bryce; his granddaughter Erin Richardson and her husband Cody; great grandson Mason and several extended family members. Mr. Michael Charles Muscat passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the Sussex Health Centre. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Dominic and sister Mary Feneche. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) with visitation on Thursday from 3-6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Michael on Friday, March 3, 2017 from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 11 am.
