Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" Monahan

On September 5, 1926, in Jeffries Corner, NB, Mrs. Mary Stella “Elizabeth” (Hayes) Monahan was born. She was the daughter of the late Urban and Ella (Hall) Hayes and the beloved wife of Raymond Monahan. Before she met, fell in love with and then married Ray, she was a teacher in a one room schoolhouse in Walker Settlement and Erb Settlement. Soon after, their marriage was blessed with children and Betty and Ray brought eight wonderful sons and daughters into the world. Of course to support a family of this size, Ray had to go out to work as a car salesman and put in long hours to do so. Betty worked so hard tending to the home and to the children and she never complained for one moment. The kids remember fetching buckets of water for the old wringer style washing machine and “pitching in” in general to help mom with the daily chores. Betty made them all hand sewn clothes and was often knitting a new pair of socks, hats or mitts for her children. No matter the season, nor the temperature in the house in the summer, Betty always put fresh, homemade, bread baked in the woodstove, on the table for her family. She was a beautiful cook and many wonderful memories were made around the dinner table. The kids especially delighted in having their mom home for them after school and in being greeted with mom’s special and delicious baked goods. She was a wonderful mother, loving and kind in her ways and these traits flowed seamlessly into her role as a grandmother. Betty was devoted to her grandchildren and delighted in their presence in her life. Nanny or “old nana” as she was affectionately referred to, made all of her children and grandchildren a quilt of their very own, a lovely keepsake for each one to enjoy. Betty loved to putter in her flower gardens and lived a simple, quiet life. She wasn’t one to be in the “limelight”, instead preferring to be a behind the scenes helper. She was a Devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier for many years. Faith was very important to Betty. Betty’s world revolved around her family and she will forever be embedded in the hearts of her loving husband Raymond; her daughters: Judy Freeze and her husband Donnie, Shirley Scott and her husband Allison and Carol Veysey and her husband Rob; her sons: Don Monahan and his wife Maggie, Gary Monahan and Susan Brooks and Earle Monahan; her sons-in-law: Ron Goddard and his wife Debbie and Don Page and Nancy McLeod; her grandchildren: Kelly Goddard, Jackie Erb and her husband David, Jennifer Hart and her husband Jamie, Wendy Douthwright, Ryan Monahan and his wife Haley, Erin Monahan and Matthew Green, Jessica Snyder and her husband Larry, Luke Scott and his wife Nancy, Katie Scott, Jonathan Veysey and Ben Veysey; her great grandchildren: Jacob, Isaac, Andrew, Matthew, Blake, Carter, Rhys, Miley, Charlee, Reegan and Rylie; her sisters: Karine Grant, Lois Cassidy; Bernice and her partner Geoff, Marie Rideout and her husband Wayne; her brothers: Fred Hayes and his wife Marg, Walter Hayes and Carolyn Webster and Carl Hayes; her sisters-in-law: Virginia Hayes and Lorena Hayes; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members. Mrs. Elizabeth Monahan of Sussex passed away at the Sussex Health Center on April 2, 2017 at the age of 90. Betty was predeceased by her daughters: Jean Goddard and Marilyn Page; her brothers: Jack, Don and Pat Hayes; her sister Marjorie Sommerville; her sisters-in-law: Norma, Debbie and Evelyn Hayes; and by her brothers-in-law: Elton Cassidy, Earl Grant and Mike Sommerville. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3-6 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated held from St. Francis Xavier RC Church on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 11:00 am. If you are considering making a memorial donation the family has recommended the Sussex Health Center or to the memorial of the donor's choice. The family would like to express their special thanks to the nurses of the East Wing of the Sussex Health Centre and her homecare workers who treated us all like family. A special thank you to her granddaughters: Jessica and Jackie for their special care and to her son, Earle who took exceptional care of Betty at home over the past few years.
