Dora McDermott

Obituary of Dora Sarah McDermott

Dora Sarah McDermott was born in Caterham, Surrey, England on March 7, 1942. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Barbara (MacKenzie) Kyle. She came to Canada with her Mum and brother in the spring of 1946, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax. Dora met a great fellow during one of his trips home from working on the Great Lake Tankers in Ontario. They soon fell in love and on February 14, 1970, Dora married James Roy McDermott and she and Jim and her first child Barb settled in Sarnia for a brief period of time. It wasn’t long before home sickness started to set in and the family decided to move back to NB to be close to Dora’s family. The family expanded at that point with the births of their son Ernie and then daughter Cathy, four years later. Dora worked very hard and held several jobs over the years at Paul’s Laundry, Barbours, the New Brunswick Orphanage and at Church Hill Manor caring for Seniors. Her strong work ethic shone through in the way that she cared for her home as well. Dora really took pleasure in the cleaning of her house and at all times, it was the definition of immaculate. This trait also carried through to Dora’s yard. She was so excited to get a new ride on lawn mower and she certainly was a force to be reckoned with while commandeering it. Her lawn was every bit as meticulous as her home. Dora enjoyed crossword puzzles, TV bingo, True Detective Books and also had a complete love for horror movies. She was a sweet and kind lady with a bit of a fiesty side. You always knew where you stood with Dora. More important than anything else, was Dora’s love for her family. She loved her husband, her children and her grandchildren deeply and unconditionally. She absolutely adored babies and was always there to offer support to other family members raising children of their own. Dora was dependable and always available to lend a hand. She will truly be missed by all who cared for her. Dora’s imprint will be forevr on the hearts of her children: Barb Melligan (Scott Finnamore) of Brantford, ON, Ernie McDermott (Lisa Burns) of Sussex and Cathy McDermott (Matthew Mallory) of Sussex; her grandchildren: Krista Kyle, Kyle Stafford, Peter Melligan and Breann Melligan, all of Ontario, Dylan McDermott of Saint John and Jemma McDermott of Sussex; her great grandchildren: Brayden, Landen, Jasik and Alesseo; her brothers: Rod Kyle (Nowell) of Sussex and Gerry Kyle of Sussex; her sisters: Judi Kyle (Dave MacKenzie) of Grand Barachois and Sally Kierstead (Gordon) of Wards Creek; her brothers-in-law: Mike McDermott (Debbie) of Quispamsis, Ralph Wood (Margaret) of Riverview; several nieces, nephews and cousins and her loyal 4 legged companion, Ollie. It is with great sadness that the family of Dora Sarah McDermott announce her passing on April 2 at her home in Fox Hill, surrounded by family. Dora was predeceased by her beloved husband, James who passed away on August 25, 2016; her brother, Ken and his wife Paula and her infant sister, Marguerite. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8pm.
