Obituary of Fred Oscar Edward Young

Mr. Fred Oscar Edward Young was born in Smiths Corner, NB on July 4, 1936, a son of the late Robert and Laura (Cail) Young.

He came to Sussex when he was 12 years old and a few years later, met his sweetheart Louise (Hunter-Gray) at a social/dance in Markhamville.  He always said that “she was the prettiest thing there and a real lady”.  As you can well imagine, Fred and Louise continued to spend time together and they eventually married and started a family.

He began his working days in his grandfather Cail's logging business, where he drove truck, yarded logs with a horse and also loaded box cars.  From there, it was off to Patriquen Motors and then to J. Clark and Sons, working in the auto body shop.  After many years of service to his employers, Fred decided to go out on his own and established Youngs Auto Body.  He started in the backyard just looking after some friends and family and by word of mouth.  Quite quickly the business grew and he had to build a little shop.  Well, that little shop soon turned into needing an even bigger shop and there the story continues. Fred was very handy and always felt that everything was fixable.  He was such a likeable guy, there when you needed him. He was kind and giving and would not hesitate to give you his last dollar if you were in need.

Family meant everything to Fred and you did not have to be related by birth to be a part of his. Once you became a member, he made you feel welcome and forever loved. Fred’s family fondly remember their Sunday drives, especially those that ended up in Saint John for a bucket of chicken and their camping trips to Martin Head, PEI and Salmon River. He and Louise also spent many wonderful seasons at Seaside Campground in St. Martins and built 20+ years full of memories with family and friends.

Fred bowled for many years in many men’s and mixed leagues and “Bomp”, as he was affectionately known to several generations, taught all the kids to drive and was a grandfather to many.

He will be remembered forever and always loved by his children: Linda Belding and her husband Paul of Sussex, Beth Horsman and her husband Loris of Petitcodiac, Terri Howatt and her husband Randy of Petitcodiac, Lennie Young of Sussex, Tracy Young and Jamie Gladstone of Sussex, Darren Young and his wife Dawn of Sussex and Danny Teed and his wife Claire of Moncton; two brothers: Dale of Fredericton and Teddy of Plaster Rock; three sisters: Shirley Gray and her husband Alvin of Hammondvale, Nancy Wood of Fredericton and Colleen of Fredericton; sister-in-law Sandra Young of Penobsquis; nine grandchildren: Scott Belding and Makailla, Jacob Belding and Samantha, Stevie-Anne Horsman, Randell Perry and her husband Robin, Tavden Howatt, Logan Howatt and Jen, Angel Howatt and Kyle, Keaton Jones and his wife Jessica, Matthew Young and Charlene Belding who was like a granddaughter; twelve great grandchildren: Katrina, Montana, Rylee, Bo, Wyatt, Parker, Camden, Kale, Prestynn, Makenzie, Arya and Levi and one great great grandchild Beau, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
