Obituary of Grace Marietta (Brown) Dunfield

Grace was born in September 21, 1920, in Penobsquis and was the eldest child of the late Edgar and Mary (Murray) Brown. 

She is survived by her son Malcolm and his wife Susan of  Riverview, daughters: Connie and her husband Wayne Snyder of Penobsquis, Marilyn of Moncton and Beth  and her husband Terry Herzog of Mayview, SK; grandchildren; Gregg (Lil) Snyder, Heather (David) McDowell, Aaron ( Andrea) Dunfield,  Kevin Dunfield, Scott (Kaitlynn)  Dunfield, Iain Herzog ( Nikki), Danny (Donna) Herzog; great grandchildren  Kayla, Tyler, Rebecca, Hayley, Katie, Aiden, Amelia, Lucas, Nathan, Jenna, Karine and Caroline and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband George (1984), her brothers, Palmer and Jack and sister Marina Kyte.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Grace walked to school in Penobsquis and while growing up she was known as Pepper. She graduated from Sussex High School in 1936 and Saint John Business School in 1937 and went to work at the Royal Bank of Canada in Sussex and Moncton.  She returned to Penobsquis after the war and married George where they operated a grocery store for 30 years and raised four children.

Grace was very active in the Church and her community.  She was a member of the Penobsquis Baptist Church, The Evelyn Gullison WMS, Cardwell Seniors, Penobsquis W. I. and the Kings County Historical Society.  Grace was known for her brown bread and scotch cakes.  She loved to quilt, garden, and make jams and pickles.

After retirement, Grace took up bowling, curling, golf and learned to play bridge. She loved to travel and loved to learn of new places and people.  She was keenly interested in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and kept up with the latest, whether it was a school, music, skating, or a hockey game.  She was 90 when she attended her last hockey tournament.  If you wanted to know about family, history or community history, she would probably have the answer for you.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, Sussex (433-1176) with visitation on Tuesday from 1 to 3 pm and 6 to 8 pm.

A Celebration of Grace’s life is being held at the Penobsquis Baptist Church on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Neville Gosman officiating.

Following a private family committal in Cardwell Cemetery, there will be a time of fellowship and light refreshment with the family in the church gymnasium.
