Dear Jeanette,
Sometimes it is hard to say what is in your heart, so I am going to put down on paper the words I wish I had said to Walter.
"Thank you for being the kind, thoughtful person you were. You made our transition to living in Sussex so much easier. You introduced us to your circle of friends and made a point of reminding us of events around the community so that we could choose to go or not. Without your involving us in the camaraderie of the coffee bunch life for us would have been a lot lonelier. We always looked forward to coffee in the afternoon when you would come strolling into "Timmies", jingling your coins and a little grin on your face. Conversation with you there was always interesting and you were always interested in what was happening in our lives.... you were a good friend. You could trade smart remarks with the best of them and laugh when you scored a good hit...you could take the gibes and never said anything mean spirited about anyone. You will be missed."
It has been said that man is considered rich by the number of friends he has - with that truth in mind, Walter was a man of considerable wealth.
I know that it will be difficult in the days ahead. There will be times of great despair and times remembering great joy. All the cliches in the world could be used here...you've heard them all over the years...you know they are used because they have veracity. Just know this Jeanette, you have many friends that love and want only to help you through this sorrow.

I am truly saddened by this. I feel so frustrated that I didn't wind up coming up sooner. I've really been meaning to come up and its been in the back of my mind that he had the close call a while back, and that we never know ...
Even though we haven't seen each other in a while, I hope it doesn't seem hypocritical that I express my sadness even though I had not been up to see you two in so long. My visit with you and Walter was very impressionable and I have thought of both of you very fondly. Every-single-time I pass by a particular barn in Vermont, I have always thought of Walter because of the tractor collection the farmer has, or any county fair that I've gone to, which would obviously have many tractors, and then, often the same with trains. I'm eager to speak to you Jeanette. I know you're busy with all who are there, so I'm glad you have all that support, but sometime soon I'd like to have the chance to chat with you as well. I'm sending you warm thoughts, and my deepest condolences.

Jo,
I was so heartbroken to learn about your Father. I am aware that there aren’t any words that help you in such a sad time but please know that we are thinking of you Jess, your Mom and the kids.
I am sure that you are doing your best to put on a strong front, because that is the type of woman you are, with all the grieving, decision making and family stress and I imagine the phone ringing off the hook it can’t be an easy task.
With all of the above going on you will be so swept up in all of it you won’t have time for yourself, the ability to grieve will be hindered. I wish I could be there for you. I want you to know that even though I am not there in person, I am here for you if you need to take a break from the craziness and just talk to someone; you can get me on my home phone or cell phone.
I met your Father a few times Jo, and he must have meant so much to you. He was a friendly, kind and intelligent man that made me feel comfortable around him. I usually keep my distance from people I don’t know well, but I never felt the need to put up that “wall” with your Father. He must have been so proud of what he raised. Such a strong woman who herself raised such a wonderful family.
Once you get a second to breathe and sit back and think about your Father’s life you won’t be sad anymore. You will appreciate that he didn’t suffer for years with sickness. You will realize that it happens to everyone and to live your own life to the fullest. You will always miss him, but you will see that his ability to raise you properly, gave you the opportunity to raise your family properly, and that will give Behn and Bekky the chance to raise their family’s properly. It’s the cycle of life and I’m sure his was a wonderful one that was full of pride for his Daughter.
I hope in such a sad time that the Family will be able to sit around and tell some Happy Stories. Give your Mom, Behn, Bekky and Jess a hug from us. We will be thinking about you and we are here for whatever you could possibly need.
