On behalf of Atlantic Wildlife Institute, we are so sorry to hear of Vanessa's passing. We were very lucky to be on her list of organizations that she so selflessly gave to. We would receive regular notices from her about new items she had made that went towards the wellbeing of our wildlife patients or some tips on how to find some good deals on sale.
Our thoughts are with her family. Thank you Vanessa for your kind heart, compassion and giving spirit. May you rest in peace.

For years Vanessa was an important member of the Board of Directors of the New Brunswick Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and a dynamic crusader for animal welfare. The many projects which she initiated and led, such as the magnificent Kibble Foodbank Program, have benefited thousands of animals. Her life stands as a reminder of just what a difference one loving and committed individual can make to the world around her. The New Brunswick SPCA extends sincere condolences to Vanessa's family. Her loss is a tragic one for all of us, and for the humane movement in New Brunswick.

I met Vanessa in the fall of Grade 10 at Chipman High School, when the "Down Country Kids", those from Coles Island became apart of our school. We became friends immediately and we visited back and forth. She had a lot of patience as she got me on a horse and attempted to teach me to ride it. I have many fond memories of her and we kept in touch over the hears. RIP Ness! Miss ya...Geri

Dearest family; Last evening I was shocked to hear of the passing of my dear friend Vanessa; she and I developed a very strong relationship when I was named as Area Manager , Addictioons and Mental Health Susssex, a post I held until August 2017; Never a week would go by where Vanessa would come into our Centre and would always enquire how I was doing as she was truly the first journalist ever to interview me when I came to Sussex in 1993. She was extremely professional, compassionate and understanding...AND above all fair and balanced. We became friends and at times would even lunch together at the Sussex Farmer's Market on Fridays , a place I routinely visited on Fridays for years....The town has lost truly an amazing lady that cared and you always knew she cared...she was genuine , respectful and in my view was a giant of a lady living amongst us that taught me so much in my career in the challenge field of mental health. I will miss her greatly. My deepest condolences are extended to the family and the community. Very sincerely Gregory, D. Zed.

Please accept our condolences in the loss of such a special person. Having come to know Vanessa after the family moved to Sussex Corner through her parents who were always so happy to see you. Vanessa inherited the same family traits in their happiness to spend a little time with you and talk about their family life as well as yours. So sorry for your loss.

The world lost an amazing, kind and self less person. Vanessa was and will always be someone people should aspire to. She volunteered much of her time and her heart to organizations and helping those in need. Her love of history, animals and gardens were what put a sparkle in her eye every time she talked about those topics.
Vanessa, I hope if you didn’t know before that you now know just how much the world appreciated your soul, and how I appreciated your friendship. I will miss you.

I am very sad to hear of Vanessa's passing. Our world has lost an amazing lady. I saw Vanessa often as she delivered her beautiful hand knit baby hats for the newborns at Saint John Regional Hospital, the knit finger puppets for the Children's Ward and the tiny quilts to cover the isolettes in the neonatal unit. She also knit tiny hats for the babies at the IWK, often in special colors to designate a special event or cause. Vanessa knit small "nests" to keep the tiny birds warm for the animal rehabilitation organizations like the Atlantic Wildlife Institute in Sackville and she was an unwavering crusader for the homeless animals in our local area. Her heart was huge and she gave endlessly. She was always "over the moon" happy with any donation of yarn or fabric and she would be in motion in seconds to get more projects underway. Vanessa will be missed dearly but her kindness and caring will live on in everyone and everything that she has cared for over the many years she lived in Sussex.
Be free Vanessa. Now you may rest. We will remember your special kindness, your beautiful smile and your unwavering dedication to those in need. You have left your gentle touch behind and we will cherish that.

I was saddened to hear about Vanessa. I got to know Vanessa through Sussex SummerFest as she worked on the Scavenger Hunt committee preparing the clues. I quickly realized how intelligent she was with a keen interest in our community and it's rich history. I was looking forward to this year's Scavenger Hunt and what Vanessa could bring to the committee. We will miss her, Rip Vanessa.

Vanessa and I worked together at a weekly newspaper in Grand Falls, N.B. She was a great reporter because she was curious and wanted to know the truth. She loved meeting people and telling their stories. I remember telling her that my husband, Bernie - who taught Vanessa at NBCC Woodstock - and I had visited Winston Churchill’s bunker in London and she was so excited. Vanessa was a huge Churchill fan. The Darkest Hour is now playing in Woodstock; when we see it we will think of Vanessa. She left this world too soon but her legacy of kindness to people, animals and the environment remains. Your friends, Anne and Bernie

We are deeply saddened to hear of Vanessa's passing. Vanessa dined with my mother and myself on Christmas and was delightful and engaging company, as always.
I know that She will be missed by the volunteer community, particularly in the organizations working for literacy outreach and animal welfare. Vanessa was never afraid to get her hands dirty and get the work done, but she was also great at inspiring others with her ideas and enthusiasm.
I'd like to extend condolences on behalf of myself and my mother, Joan West, to all of Vanessa's family and friends.
Sincerely,
Ruth West
