Mr. Alphonse "Al" Walter Daigle was born in Bathurst on July 14, 1926; he was the son of the late Alfred and Margaret (Bernard) Daigle. In 1933, Al and his family moved to Western, PEI, where he and his brothers and sisters attended a one-room schoolhouse. He was introduced to religion by his mother who taught him the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary. They travelled to Church on Sunday by horse and buggy or by taking a short cut across the fields. After attending a militia camp, "He was hooked" and one week after his 16th birthday, Al enlisted. Early one morning, after his training was completed, he boarded the Queen Mary bound for Scotland and he remained in the Armed Forces until 1946.
