Obituary of Dorothy Evelyn Nelson

Dorothy Evelyn Nelson was born on July 24, 1939 in Hillsborough, New Brunswick, the daughter of the late Harry and Jessie (Steeves) Wilson. She was one of 10 children.

She graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1959, working as a telephone operator on weekends and summer holidays to earn enough funds to attend Oulton Business College. She graduated from the business program in 1960 and worked for an insurance company in Moncton for a year until she married.

She met Merrill Nelson of Lower Cape in 1959 and they were married on Oct. 28, 1961, beginning 57 years of married life. They lived on Floral Avenue in Sussex, where Merrill worked for the family company Nelson Monuments, and Dot worked in the office at the Sheer Silk hosiery company. They had two children, Charlene and Eileen, and in 1970 moved into their newly built home on Riverview Avenue in Sussex.

Dorothy enjoyed family life, gardening, cooking, camping, barbershop and choral singing, and traveling. She volunteered at the school library and the hospital gift shop, did student tutoring and was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church. She was a proud grandparent of grandson Jonathan.

She will live on in the hearts of her husband, Merrill; their children: Charlene MacKenzie and Warren Hoyle of Niagara Falls and Eileen of Sussex; her grandson, Jonathan MacKenzie of Halifax; her son-in-law, Shaun MacKenzie; her sisters: Phyllis Fowler of Moncton, Bonnie Lee Grande  and her husband Joe of Mississauga; her sisters-in-law, Janet Wilson of Hillsborough, Gail Nelson of Sussex and Carolyn Nelson of Vermilion Bay, ON; her brother, Charles Wilson and his wife Grace of Hillsborough; her brothers-in-law: Eric Nelson and his wife Carol of Sussex and Garth Nelson and his wife Allison of Kitchener; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her sisters: Donna and Darlene as infants, Marion McGowan (Ike) and Barbara Wilson; her brothers: Dave Wilson and Conrad Wilson (Susie); her brother-in-law, Carter Nelson.

Dot passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Sussex Health Centre with her family by her side at age 79.

Arrangements are entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home at 34 Sunnyside Drive in Sussex, where visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 14, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm.

A service celebrating Dot’s life will be held at St. Paul’s United Church at 4 Morrison Avenue in Sussex on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018 at 11 am.
