Obituary of Grant Horton
It is with heavy hearts that the family of James "Grant" Horton announce his sudden passing on June 6, 2019 at his residence in Crawford Lake at the age of 80.
Grant was born on February 2, 1939 in Moncton, NB; he was the son of the late George and Alyce (Steeves) Horton. They moved to Sussex in 1943. Grant attended Rothesay Collegiate for several years and then went to Horton Academy of Acadia where he met his wife to be, Marilyn. They both graduated in 1957. Grant headed west to Calgary for three years and then returned to marry the love of his life and best friend in 1960 and spent the next 58 years together enjoying life and celebrating their love story.
Grant was an avid outdoorsman; whether it was fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, or four-wheeling and he loved spending time at the camp in Anderson Brook with his father, brother and brother-in-law and then finding the gem he would later call home at Crawford Lake. He was a hard worker, working for the Mactaquac Dam and all over the Maritimes with Atmus Equipment as a heavy duty mechanic, then the potash mine as the Superintendent of Mechanics until his retirement in 1999. He then became absorbed in his favorite hobby, collecting and repairing vintage radios. He finally had to build a two-story addition on the cottage to house his workshop. He loved to browse through flea markets and ham radio fests for treasures.
He could fix anything and built a working sawmill at his parents home with the help of his father. In later years, despite his health issues Grant never slowed down. He still took trips with Marilyn, worked on anything that needed fixing, went to Wednesday night suppers with the boys and told stories to anyone that came to visit.
Grant was known for his sense of humour and his zest for life. He was a gentle man and a gentlemen. Always smiling and loved his family with all of his heart. He will be deeply missed.
Grant will live on in the heart of his loving wife of 58 years, Marilyn; his daughters: Heather Horton and Kevin Adair and Sandra McFarlane and her husband Jim; his son, George Horton and his wife Lori; his grandchildren: Justin McKnight and his wife Missy, Josh McKnight and his wife Randi, Lukas McKnight, Emily Horton, Sophie Horton, Allie Legere and Dan Mahaney, Danielle Legere and Taylor McKay, Colin Legere Vanessa McKellar, Kyra Horton and Brennaugh Horton; his great-grandchildren: Samantha and Autumn McKnight, Ariel McKnight, Brooklyn Racette and Emilie Mahaney; his brother, Rick Horton and his wife Pat; his sister, Pat Gillies and her husband Ray; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex NB (506-433-1176). A celebration of Grant’s life will be held on Monday, June 10, 2019 at 11:00am from Wallace Community Chapel, followed by a time of fellowship with the family.
