Peacefully, and surrounded by the love of his girls, Donald E. Moore of Sussex, N.B. passed away on Jan. 13, 2020. Don, affectionately known as “Duckie” in his old stomping grounds of Saint John, was born in Albert County, N.B. on Oct. 14, 1930 to Etta-May (Cooke) and Charles J. Moore. He is survived by his wife, Theresa (McGarrigle); daughters: Maryann Moore of Sussex Corner, Dianne Sullivan and her husband John of Miramichi, Maureen Moore of Sussex and Heather Moore and her husband Marc Gorbet of Carlisle, Ont.; two grandsons: Andrew Wallace and Amanda Rouse of Penobsquis; and Jason Wallace and his wife Abria of Vaughn, Ont.; one great grand-daughter Maylee Wallace; sisters-in-law: Shirley Moore of Saint John, Jackie McGarrigle of Sussex and Carol Randall of Fredericton; brothers-in-law: Donald McGarrigle of Woodstock and Eldon McGarrigle of Fredericton; as well as several nieces and nephews. Don was the last surviving member of his family. Don was predeceased by his sister, Audrey Murphy; his brothers: Charles and Bill; and his infant daughter, Wanda Elizabeth; his brothers-in-law: Frank Murphy, Cecil McGarrigle, Gerald McGarrigle, Marven McGarrigle; his sisters-in-law, Theresa Moore, Carol McGarrigle and Cel McGarrigle. The “Duck” grew up on Spring Street in Saint John and attended Holy Trinity School as a young lad. He then moved on to graduate from St. Vincent’s Boys School in 1949, and Saint John Vocational School in 1950. Don began his career with Canadian National Railway in 1951 and proudly ran his trains for 39 years, before retiring from the Moncton Via Rail office in 1990. In his early years with CN, Don travelled all over the province before settling in Sussex as the Train dispatcher/operator. It was in Sussex that Don met the love of his life, Theresa Cecilia McGarrigle of Sussex. In 1958, Don & Theresa married and created a loving home for their four daughters on top of O’Connell Avenue, where Don and Theresa remained for 60 years. Don had a strong passion for sports. As a youngster, Don was an “athletic bolt of lightning.” He was involved in many sports but loved none more than baseball. His speed and keen eye saw him excel on the diamond and help his teams win multiple Maritime and Kings County championships. His passion carried through into his adult life where he contributed greatly to minor sports in Sussex. He coached baseball and hockey for many years and wrote sports news for the Kings County Record. His articles were full of statistics, witty stories and, of course, names of all the young players who loved to see their accomplishments in print. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and the Sussex Golf and Curling Club. He volunteered countless hours to the church, the Knights of Columbus and the golf and curling club. He loved to golf and curl and was able to do so up until 2015. His quick wit and endless teasing were his signature trademark to all who knew him. However, in the eyes of his girls, he was the gem of all fathers — humble, fair, compassionate, quietly generous and always their #1 fan. He was loved to infinity by his family and will be missed dearly. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex (506-433-1176) from where visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2020 from 1 to 3pm and 6 to 8 pm. A Christian Mass will be held in celebration of Don’s life from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church on Friday, January 17, 2020 at 11:00am. A private family burial will be held in Wards Creek Cemetery, at a later date.
