Dear Lorraine and family,
We were shocked to hear that Tony has passed away, We want to express our most sinceres condolances to you.
Only a few weeks ago I talked to Toon on the phone for over 30 minutes and that was hardly enough because het kept on going.
I promised to find some special knives for him and call him back. a.s.a.p. Unfortunately, this didn't happen.
I first met Toon some 45 years ago at my unle's, Tony Verhoeven, when he was 48 and I was 17. We didn't have much in common then, but last August we met again in your house in Sussex and there was a sort of instant click.
Well Lorraine, I am very sorry that you couldn't get Tony back in your house for a last periode. We hope you find the strenght to cope with your loss and we remind Tony as a warm and kind familyman.
Greetings from Holland,
Ine & Hen Verhoeven.

Tony was a great friend to Brian and I over the years. He lived a very interesting and fulfilled life. Brian and Tony go back a long way; he first met him as an assistant Scout Leader shortly after Tony immigrated to Canada. He was a great help to our children with their 4-H sheep projects. He truly loved sheep and agriculture and making things better. He made life better for lots of people. We will miss him.

I will always remember the warm welcome that “Big Tone” would offer when we all would drop in at dinner and often stay until the morning- Tony always welcomed us- and often fed the group!

To Lorraine and family, Thinking of you at this sad time. I got to know Tony when he was at SHC a couple of years ago. I was surprised to hear that he and my grandmother Clara Cummings, from Norton, used to have lots of talks when Tony would come by selling meat. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Sincerely, Dodie Campbell, and Bob and Cindy DeVos

Lorraine, Andrea, Wil and Families, I am so sorry to read that Tony has passed away. It is a very difficult time for you all I am sure. As you know, Lorraine, I have known Tony for many years and heard many of his stories and had wonderful conversations and lots of laughs too. I enjoyed many a visit with Lorraine and Tony over the past years and even enjoyed a few Christmas Dinners with you. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and always alerted me to a new photo. Many remembrances and prayers are with you all at this time. Blessings to you all.

So very sorry for your loss. I met Tony in 1978 when Gil and I moved to Sussex. Even though I initially met him as a “ patient” we became instant friends! He was always interested in my heritage ( Newfoundlander) and shared stories of sending “ oak beams” to Port de Grave for longliner construction by the Petton brothers. He always had a great tale to tell about his dealings with Nfld. I always enjoyed his visits to the office....with his little gifts of smoked sausage,salmon,head cheese ( the absolute best...my mouth waters) and asparagus. He gave us a lamb skin for our son’s carriage and sled and countless other kind gestures. He will always be remembered. Such a kind man...an honour to have had him cross our paths.

Greg and I extend our love and deepest sympathy to you, Lorraine, Wil and Andrea and your families for your great loss. You opened your home to Erik, and Erik so enjoyed talking to Big Tone about sausages, and I’m sure, many other interesting topics. Whenever, I saw him, he spoke of his family, whom, he loved dearly and gave him such pride, and rightly so. Thinking of each of you with love, Linda and Greg Homenick

Dear Lorraine and family. I met Toon back in 1978 when we moved to Canada. He was one of the Nederlanders that lived in the Sussex area. But Toon was so much more than that, he was an amazing family friend. My mam and Toon knew each other as children back in the Netherlands and that friendship continued throughout their lives. He was a regular at our home, ‘popping’ in just to say hello whenever or just to have a bite to eat. My father and Toon worked together for years at his cedar shingle mill at Hynses corner in Plumweseep. Those two old birds were more like brothers than both realized. He will be missed. Lorraine, Andrea, Wil & families;
We were so sorry to hear of Tony's passing, our deepest sympathy for your great loss. We met tony when we moved to Sussex from Newfoundland. Actually we met him in church and thus started a forever friendship. He would visit us and show us his sheepskins that he did, bring along a piece of trout or salmon that he had smoked. When we started doing our fish from our pond or salmon, he would always tell us if it was good or not...LOL. He loved to share his stories, his experiences and wisdom from the goodness of his heart. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time. RIP Tony, always in our hearts.

The Shepherd
How sweet is the Shepherd’s sweet lot!
From the morn to the evening he strays;
He shall follow his sheep all the day,
And his tongue shall be filled with praise.
For he hears the lamb's innocent call,
And he hears the ewe's tender reply;
He is watchful while they are in peace,
For they know when their Shepherd is nigh.

I will forever remember Big Tone. First of all - whoever wrote that obituary wasn't kidding about those sausages - they were incredible! The man could cook, thats for sure. But, more importantly, as annoying teenagers we could always storm into the van Hal residence with a crew of 5-6 and Big Tone and Lorraine wouldn't hesitate to make us feel like family. And you could always count on some great conversations with Tony, which would often include amazing stories with incredible detail. We would often just sit there and listen to him in his chair these, telling these tales that sounded like they were from another world, which I suppose they were considering his childhood/early adult life. Of course, we would generally be made to load a cord of wood down to the basement afterward... but we're stronger because of it. He must have loved being a cabbie because he was also our consummate chauffeur. The Caprice Classic had never seen so many requests, but Big Tone never hesitated. I can still picture his massive thumb at the top of the wheel. He was a big part of my teenaged years and I will always respect him and remember him as a super interesting and loving guy. We'll miss you Big Tone.
