A couple years ago Fred Whalen invited my mother over to his house. My mother, who attended Sussex High with Fred, told me that I should come along. She claimed that It would be in interesting visit, but there was no way to anticipate how fascinating it turned out to be. My mother and Fred talking about Sussex and old times. But then, Fred wanted to talk science, and his excitement about the new techniques for genetic engineering—CRISPR. I was stunned at the extent of his knowledge of the molecular mechanisms that have been exploited for use in laboratories around the world. He was even intrigued by the details of the legal squabble that had erupted about patenting rights. He had picked his favorites in this dispute. After being left out of this conversation, my mother asked what CRISPR meant. I stumbled around the initialization. Was the first R for repetitive? No, Fred chimed in: Clustered Regularly Interspersed Palidromic Repeats CRISPR. It was an amazing afternoon, talking science and drinking lemonade while looking out over the valley from his back deck. Since then Fred and I exchanged e-mail and discussed CRISPRs and how the application of the technology was expanding exponentially. It was only after that first visit that I discovered how rich a life Fred had lived: as a priest, an information technology entrepreneur and always with a wide-ranging curiosity.

In 1944 Fred and I graduated from Sussex High School. We used to take the SMT bus together. I came from Penobsquis and he would catch the bus at Piccadily Road. After high school we lost touch as we went our separate ways.
We reconnected after 74 years when Fred was living in Sussex. Then, during the summer of 2018 my son and I visited Fred at his home, The view from his back deck of the mountains and valleys was breathtaking.
We had a very nice visit since Fred was interested in so many things and was interested in the type of scientific research that my son is doing. After the visit we stayed in touch by phone and e-mail.
It was so pleasant to reminisce about the acquaintances and the area around Piccadilly. He had a real love for the area. We last talked in July. He talked about his garden and how much help he got from his neighbor tilling the garden and how his niece helped with mowing his yard.
It was a real pleasure to get re-acquainted with Fred. He was always kind, interested and interesting.

As Fred would say, "It's all because of a loaf of bread". Fred and I met several years ago over a loaf of bread at Superstore and our friendship began. He became my go-to-guy for gardening tips and we enjoyed swapping stories. Daryl enjoyed Fred's keen interest in farming and gave him a tour of our new barn with robotic milkers. He was impressed with modern day farming. Although Adrian only met Fred this spring they quickly became friends and he helped him with his garden. We will definitely miss him.

We were saddened by the news of Fred’s passing. We were blessed with Fred as our new next door neighbor when we purchased our first house on Church avenue in the early 1990’s. He seemed honored that we had a cat named Fred. It was hard to say who entertained who, as we each had projects in our respective yards. We spent many long hours trying to solve the political and social problems of the day, which there were many. Fred’s gardening took him to new heights, literally, as he spent hours grafting, and the process of bagging his apples on the tree. Bonnie sewed row cover fabric into bags with little drawstrings for him, so he could re-use them instead of the paper bags he was stapling on.
Fred loved to talk politics, either Canadian or US, and was never one to back away from a good discussion, often ending with a bit of a smile and twinkle in his eye, when he would jump back slightly and point at you and say “Right On”
Fred invited us over one evening in 1996 to watch the New Hampshire primary results, we all enjoyed the discussions, it was a very fun evening.
We would see Fred from time to time after we moved, most recently one afternoon at Sobeys about a year ago or so, we talked for a little while, then sat by the bakery, picking up the conversation it seemed where we last had been together.
Reading through other remembrance entries, it seems we were not the only ones who would tease him about being a spy.
Fred will definitely be missed, but he will never be forgotten.

To Fred’s family. We were saddened to hear of Fred’s passing. He was a lovely man and he and Arie had many interesting conversations together. They admired each other’s intelligence. We also loved Fred’s sense of humor and nearly every conversation ended with a humorous remark. He will certainly be missed. Rest In Peace Fred. Marie and Arie Ruitenberg

Loved talking with Fred. Did not always agree on politics but loved talking family and visiting old graveyards. Took us twice trying to find Philmunroe cemetery. Finally Dick McLeod drove us in. Fred had his walking sticks and was able to manoeuvre around the site. Took Fred pies at Christmas but was never sure if he liked mincemeat or not. Fred was one of a kind. That twinkle and his laugh kept conversations interesting. RIP Fred. Will miss you around.

Nancy and I and our 3. Children lived down the street from your uncle Fred at 170 Church .We all counted him as a friend and would often have visits on the street as he walked down to the church or to the Irving for bananas ...‘best value in town ‘.
Fred was one of a kind and You captured him so well in the obituary .A very sharp mind and a quick wit who loved a good laugh And a good debate ..We shared political (and a zone )battle and I enjoyed a Few good chats in his very casual kitchen .“Hold on “he would say as he moved some newspapers .
He was always reserved and mysterious with me about the computer business and I had fun accusing him of being a retired spy .
Fred was a good friend of my aunt Harriet (Freeze)Folkins originally from Penobsquis They went to school together and stayed friends and had suppers in later years .
We moved to Chester N.S. 2 years ago and lost touch but I have been watching the obits to see when he got away .Good to see he died at home as he was no fan of doctors or hospitals as I recall .
I THINK He would have loved this obit especially “OH DEAR”

Fred Whalen was a heck of a guy. We enjoyed him immensely as a neighbour and a friend who always brightened our day when we crossed paths. Despite our political differences or better still probably because of them, we would have lively discussions and somewhat sarcastic repartee when we met. We learned quickly to be on our toes when a twinkle sparkled in his eyes because something witty or challenging was coming. Nevertheless his kindness and genuine interest in our well-being made every meeting memorable and we will miss him. Rest well, old friend until we meet again.

I would run into Fred in the grocery store and he would always stop to talk. He had a way of holding your attention and informing you. Dad (Joe Geldart) would drive us kids out Picadilly Rd.sometimes and always mention the Whalen property near the golf & curling club, his mother having been a Whalen herself. Yes, I remember his gladiolus he would pick and deliver to mom.
