Obituary of Eva Ross
Surrounded by her family, the passing of Eva Ross, wife of the late John J. Ross occurred at her home on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. She was born in Sunderland, England on March 20, 1921 to Richard and Mary (Clarey) Gibbs. Eva came to Canada in 1946 with her two year old daughter Ann, leaving her loving mother, father, three brothers, and five sisters to reunite with the love of her life in Sussex, New Brunswick.
Eva was a caring wife and mother who showed much affection for her seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. When her son became disabled in his teenage years, she devoted her life to his care.
A member of St. Francis Xavier Church, she received strength from her faith, giving her great comfort and peace throughout her life. She was active with the Emergency Hospital Services during World War II and after the war was a member of the British War Brides and the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 Ladies Auxiliary.
As a member of the War Brides in the Sussex area, Eva always looked forward to the gatherings of these spirited ladies to share stories of their families and homeland. She always shared in the entertainment by singing about England and the War with her beautiful voice. She was also known for her love of poetry and storytelling as she could recite many poems and often told many stories to her grandchildren.
Traveling was one of Eva's joys. She always looked forward to the annual War Bride reunion with one of the highlights being a trip to Halifax to visit Pier 21. She also had a green thumb which could be attested to by the beautiful plants surrounding her home. In later years, Eva was able to stay in her home with the support of her family and loving caregivers.
Eva is survived by her three daughters, Jean Ross (Mike) of Roachville, Phyllis Cooling (Doug) of Miramichi, and Sheila Ross of Ottawa, Ontario; son-in-law Larry Lockhart of Belleisle; seven grandchildren, Lorie Lockhart (Dave) of Belleisle and her children Mitchell, Steven, and Katie; Rick Lockhart (Alana) of Norton and their children Emily, Danielle, and Lauren; Cathy LeBreton (Evan) of Riverview and their daughter Anna; Stephen Pearson (Laurie)of Fredericton and their children , Simon, Oliver, and Hunter; Jacquelyn Perry (Wayne) of Codys and their children, Courtney, Cody, and Cassidee; Alex Cooling of London ,Ontario; and Nick Cooling of Fredericton; several nieces and nephews from Canada and England; loving caregivers, Anna Quinn, Karen Langille and Heather Scott.
Eva was predeceased by her daughter, Ann Lockhart and her son Jack Ross; three brothers and five sisters.
Eva was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
