Obituary of Ethyl Long
Ethyl Long was born in Mt. Hebron on November 20, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Alfred MacLeod and Bertha Iola (Cook) Riedle and the wife of the late Russell Long who passed away in 1974.
Ethyl is survived by her daughter, Phyllis MacAfee; two sons: William "Bill" and Larry and his wife Sue; four grandchildren: Virginia, Dylan, Nigel and Gabrielle; as well as several nieces and nephews and her adopted cat "Boots". She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her daughter, Lorraine E. Long in 1956, two sisters: Dorothy Robinson in 2003 and Helen Cosman in 2005 and by her brother Burton Riedle in 2007.
Ethyl was a wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was a very feisty, determined and strong willed lady who was never afraid to speak her mind. However, she was always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. She gave of herself unconditionally to the less fortunate. Ethyl was the typical farmer's wife, she worked hard, to look after her home and her children while Russell ran the farm and on occasion she even made time to help the children sell fresh strawberries at the road. She was a former clerk at Stedman's in Sussex before she was married. She was a former member of Norton United Church where she was also a member of the UCW. After Russell's death in 1974, Ethyl had to learn to drive because she still had Larry to raise. She had to drive him to town and to hockey, and in later years Ethyl enjoyed going for drives by herself.
Mrs. Ethyl Matilda Long of Church Ave. Sussex formerly of Riverbank passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on March 17, 2010 at the age of 89.
