Obituary of Mildred Kierstead
Mildred was born in Saint John on January 12, 1925; she was the daughter of the late Elijah Kierstead and Elizabeth (Jonah) and was the wife of the late Daryl Winfield Keirstead who passed away in 1993.
She was baptized in 1938; she graduated from Saint John Vocational High School in 1943. On her 23rd birthday she was proposed to and on April 24th 1948 she married WWII veteran Daryl Kierstead. As newlyweds, they moved to Berwick and lived with Daryl's aging parents. They were 6 years waiting for their first child. Mildred was a stay at home mother as well as looking after her elderly in-laws. Her home was always open to family, neighbors and strangers alike. Her teapot was always present on the stove and everyone was made to feel at home. Mildred didn't travel a lot out of the province but did have a trip to western Canada many years ago and a trip to Boston.
Mildred was very active with the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch # 20 Ladies Auxiliary; she donated many hours in the kitchen preparing for banquets and held the offices of president, vice president and secretary. She was a member of Wesley United Church in Berwick, the UCW, the Womens Institute and Millstream Seniors. Mildred volunteered countless hours at Betty Webb's special care home, enjoyed sewing, knitting and in her spare time she loved to quilt and she made sure all of her family have one. During her years at the Kiwanis Nursing Home she participated in as much as possible: she enjoyed bowling, manicures, bingo, sing-a-longs, day trips in the van and Sunday Church Service and crafts.
Mildred played baseball in High School and took it very serious. Whatever she chose to do, she did it with passion. She did not tolerate bullies and always looked forward to hugs. Her home was the neighborhood drop in Center and she would take a day and do nothing but bake. All the children who came to the house knew just which cupboard to run to. It was ALWAYS full. She especially loved sweets, anything lemon so those were usually on hand.
Mildred is survived by her daughter. Heather Steeves and Calvin Griffith , three sons: Paul and his wife Heather; Gordon and his wife Sally; Bruce and Lucie Bourque; three sisters: Hazel Knowlton, Ruth Beshara and her husband George, Pat Beshara and her husband Ronald , her sister-in-law: Janet Kierstead; her brother-in-law Rev.
