Obituary of Mary O'Dell

Mary was born in Alma on February 28, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edgett and Sarah Katherine (Rossiter) and the wife of Reginald Elwood O’Dell. Mary was the thirteenth out of fourteen children. She attended school in Alma until the age of 11 or 12 when she left to work as a housekeeper for $2.00 a week in LaSheer Corner (now known as Dieppe). In 1944, she went to work in a lumber camp as a cook for one summer and one winter. She met Reginald O'Dell and they were married March 15, 1945. In 1947, they moved to Hammond Vale where they would remain. Mary worked in Sussex as a housekeeper for different people while raising her family. Once, the children were old enough she went back to work full-time. Mary worked at McCready’s Food for a while then went to work at Glendale Homes doing electrical work etc.. Mary worked there until they closed. She returned to McCready's making and bottling chow and beets. From there she worked at Barbour Foods in the spice and tea rooms. Mary also sold Avon from 1989 until 2003 and volunteered at the Sussex Legion up until a few years ago. She was also past president of the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20. Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Reginald; her four daughters: Bella McGouey and her husband Gregory of South Branch, Eleanor Dennis and her husband Ronald of Hammondvale, Marie Proctor and her husband Cedric of Williams Lake, BC, Patricia Floyd and her husband Gerald of Hammondvale; her brother, William Edgett of Riverview; her ten grandchildren: Kathleen, William, Valerie, Susan, Neal, Kevin, Mitchel, Matthew, Melissa and Emily; her ten great grand children: Alexander, Erica, Madison, Amanda, Anthony, Jamie, Katyln,Trista, Morgan and Alaina; as well as several nieces and nephews Mary Kathleen of Hammondvale, passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on March 15, 2009 at the age of 81. She was predeceased by four brothers: Calvin, Ernest, Gilford and Vincent and by seven sisters: Marie, Marion, Eleanor, Nora, Bernice, Muriel and Leta. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A service celebrating Mary’s life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 2:00 pm. www.wallacefuneralhome.com
