Obituary of Evelyn Frances Pearson
Evelyn Frances (nee Reinhart) Pearson, 92, of Sussex Corner, passed away at home on November 19, 2013. She was the wife of the late Victor Pearson. Evelyn was born in Saint John to William Obediah Reinhart and Alma Frances (nee Oram) Reinhart on August 19, 1921, at home on Metcalf St.; she had four sisters and two brothers. The family attended the Victoria Baptist Church, where Evelyn was a member of the choir, the C.G.I.T, and the basketball team. They later attended the Douglas Avenue Christian Church, where Evelyn was a member of the choir until age 16. She was in the Girl Guides until age 14.She attended Lorne School from grades 1-6 and Alexandra School for grades 7 and 8. Evelyn went to Saint John High School for grade 9 and then switched to Vocational School for grade 10. She and her sister Marie both had to leave school early in 1938 to work at New System Laundry, as their father William had passed away. Evelyn’s skating career started at age 12 when she received her first pair of speed skates. She skated for the Saint John Police Department. She remembers that her uniform was orange and brown, and that she won every single race and received ribbons and medals. At age 15 she skated for the Visart Rink in the north end, sponsored by the Saint John Police Department in the North American Speed Skating Championships and won two medals. While working for New System, she was asked to skate in a competition; this was the only race she didn’t win, as she was out of practice and fell. Evelyn had met dad, Victor H. Pearson, at the Forum in 1937 while skating. They were married on July 22, 1938. Evelyn and Victor proceeded to have a family of four daughters. Barbara Frances learned to skate at age 3 at the Visart St. Rink. Joan Victoria, Pauline Mildred, and Mary Ellen all took to speed skates while Barbara leaned towards figure skates. The family moved from Adelaide St. to Sandy Point Road in 1949. Lily Lake then became the new rink for all. Evelyn and Victor skated at many of the rinks in Saint John whenever the opportunity arose. They won prizes in carnivals put on by the police department. A move to Sussex then had them skating at the Eighth Hussars Rink, where they were known as “The Skating Pearsons.” They also went to Saint John to skate at the Lancaster Rink and Harbour Station with Pat Byrne of Southfield. Pat Byrne's sister, Margaret (Cogger) Casey, age 73, is still skating in Saint John. Evelyn stopped skating at the passing of Victor in December 2005, at the age of 86. Other skating family members included: Hazel Alberta Oram, Evelyn's aunt, who took part in speed skating races at the Victoria Rink in Saint John. Hazel married Todd R. Thompson, who along with his brother, Edmond, played hockey with the Saint John Beavers. Todd was #26 on the original Beaver team. Evelyn is survived by her four daughters: Barbara Pearson, Joan (Fred) Thorpe, Pauline (Jack) Crealock and Mary (Donald) Duke; her grandchildren: Glenna, Crailey, Victoria, Crystal, Angelia, Jonathan, Mathew, Jo-Ellen, Jennifer and Chantal; her great-grandchildren: Theoren, Thayne, Kristina, Gregory, Landon, Brody, Taylor, Ethan, Sophie, Ellie, Leah Marie and Quinn Nicole; her great-great-grandchild, Eli Victor Arbeau, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members & friends.
