Obituary of George W. Aker
The death of George William Aker of Sussex, occurred at the Moncton Hospital on March 25, 2011 at the age of 71. Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, the son of the late Cecil and Betty Aker. George is survived by his wife of 50 years Mary (Bartlett) Aker, their children; Sue Aker-Doney (Doug) of Sussex, Sherri (Mark) Bowser of Dieppe and Scott (Kim) Aker of Saint John, grandchildren; Brianne, Hayley, Delaney, Ethan, Jacob, Cole, Caleb, Tom, Trent, Carter and Sophie, sister-in-law Gwen (Mansel) Warren of Sydney Mines, niece and nephew Kim and Jason and special cousins Susan and Allison. George was predeceased by his sister Sandra Aker, stepfather Johnny Henderson and special aunt and uncle Emily and Jimmy Inch. George came to Sussex in 1975 as manager of Lockhart’s and later purchased the Beaver Lumber franchise, where he made a lot of friends. After selling Beaver Lumber in 2000, George just couldn’t retire and has worked at various jobs over the years to keep active. George was very involved in his community. He has been a member of the Kiwanis Club for 35 years and was a Past President. He was also a Past President of the Sussex and District Chamber of Commerce. George attended St. Paul’s United Church, currently serving on the board of trustees and a longtime member of the Session. George loved to feed the birds, spend time at the trailer, play cards with the boys and look after the ladies at the manor. He always watched the grandchildren at their various sports and cadet activities. George always had a heart of gold, he welcomed new family members with open arms and would be there to help anyone in need. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex (506-433-2133) on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday March 29, 2011 at St. Paul’s United Church, Sussex at 2:00PM with Rev. Scott Hillier officiating. Interment will be at Kirk Hill Cemetery. Donations made to the Sussex Health Centre Mammography Machine, the IWK Hospital or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
