Obituary of Rita McLaughlin
McLaughlin, Rita Hannorah (nee Cummings), 86, of Sussex Corner, passed away at home surrounded by her family on August 5, 2011. Rita was born in Southfield at the “Moosehorn” on June 9, 1925; she was a daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (nee McGinnis) Cummings. Mom was the youngest child of a family of 15. She spent her younger years in Southfield going to school and enjoying her walks to Aiton Corner with her brothers and friends; here they enjoyed sing songs, skating and hanging out. Rita married Hazen McLaughlin in 1947, and raised a family of 9. They settled in Poodiac, and then moved to Newline Road. Mom was a homemaker and also worked outside our home too. She worked in restaurants and retired from the Sussex Health Center as a cook. Mom loved life and enjoyed it through music, dance, traveling and just living, but mostly through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one grat-great-grandchild. Mom’s door was always open, and there was always room for more at the table. She enjoyed her friends, and her day trips with them. Mom will be missed a lot, and remembered with love and a smile. Rita is survived by her children: Catherine Hourihan of Passekeag; Edward McLaughlin (Donna) of Poodiac; Veronica Smith (Alfred) of Poodiac; Barb McMackin (Joe) of Hammondvale; Michael McLaughlin (Irma) of Newline; Christine McLaughlin of Poodiac; Regina McLaughlin (Tony) of Sussex; Francis McLaughlin of Newline; her grandchildren: Rose, Monica, Lorraine, Melissa, Julie, Dawn Marie, Carson, Mary Gayle, Geb, Crystal, Colleen, Darren, John, Rebecca, Amy, Jason, Matthew, Kathleen, Jessica, Jarrod; 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and her sisters-in-law: Clara Stephens, Betty McLaughlin and Margaret McLaughlin. Besides her parents and husband, Rita was predeceased by a daughter in infancy; her son, James McLaughlin; her grandson, Patrick McLaughlin; her son-in-law, William Hourihan; her brothers: William, Sterling, Clarence, Leo, Howard, Medley, and Leslie; her sisters: Alice Carty, Elizabeth Ross, Lillian Hourihan, Bernice Cummings, Agnes Carty, Lulu Hourihan, and Ruby Hourihan. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Sussex Select Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex. The funeral mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Norton on Monday at 10:00 am with Father Arnold Hachey officiating. Interment will take place in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
