Melva was accurately described by the New Brunswick 4-H Council as “someone with an endless supply of energy for her family and community; a selfless, unique, hard-working person that enriches the lives of all with her tireless labours and efforts to promote agriculture in every form.” She first became interested in 4-H in 1955, when she attended a 4-H achievement day with her husband, who was a member of the organization as a boy. From that point she served as a leader and teacher for several sewing and dairy projects, working at the district and provincial levels, and eventually becoming one of only a handful of people to receive a lifetime membership in the Canadian 4-H Council. Agriculture was a passion for Melva, as well as a way of life and she took great pleasure in teaching children and others the wonders of farm life. She often led tours of the Hornbrook Centennial Farm, leaving people with a wealth of knowledge about livestock and produce. Hornbrook Ayrshires always placed in the front class at local dairy shows – a sure sign of expert care from dedicated people. Among other admirable achievements, Melva was the first New Brunswick woman to be inducted into the Atlantic Canada Agricultural hall of fame and was involved in many clubs and organizations. These include, the Mt. Middleton Sunday School, being a secretary-treasurer for the King’s County Agricultural Fair, the Sussex and Studholm Agricultural Society, the Country Living Days Committee, being a lifetime member of the Women’s Institute, and the UCW. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex (506-433-2133) on Thursday, May 24, 2007 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.
