Obituary of Harris Ivan Murray McEwen

With thanksgiving for a life well-lived we announce the death of Harris Ivan Murray McEwen on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Sussex Health Centre. Harris was born in Carsonville on March 28, 1933 the youngest child of Hanford and Gertie (Cook) McEwen. He spent his entire life on the same farm and in the same home where he was born and where is grandparents, Thomas and Margaret Jane (Gallagher) McEwen settled in 1895. On June 23, 1954 he married Kay (Edna Kathleen Price) daughter of Ralph and Elsie (Marshall) Price of Sussex and they began their life together on the farm where they raised their family of eight children. Harris was a dairy farmer and a woodsman and was known among the local farmers when he would arrive with his wood cutter, or thresher during harvest season and in later years with his combine; a well-respected occupation begun by his father. Family, friends and community were important to Harris which have been instilled into his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed life and always took time to rest, relax and have fun especially going to Saturday night dances at the Millstream Couples Club or square dances in Smith Creek and Markhamville. He was a life-time member of the Carsonville Head of Millstream United Church, a Trustee of the Carsonville Cemetery, a member of the Sussex and Studholm Agricultural Society, a member of Southern New Brunswick Wood Co-op, an original supporter to establish the Millstream Fire Department as well as the Millstream Cubs and Boy Scouts and supported the Agricultural Museum in Sussex. The gifts and legacy of the life of Harris McEwen have been passed on to his family and many friends who are grieving his death while celebrating his life. Harris is survived by his wife Kay and their eight children: Edna and Neil Steen, Snider Mountain; Sally and Mike Carhart, Carsonville; Sandra and Murray Hayes, Carsonville; Gladys Geldart, Alton NS; Andrew and Carolyn McEwen, Carsonville; Roberta and Jamie Schiedel, Newtown; Angela McEwen and Tim Walford, Saint John; and Neil McEwen and Philip Himmelman, LaHave NS. He is also survived by: 19 grandchildren and their spouses/partners; 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters Laura Jones, Sussex Corner and Edris Keys, Sussex; the Price family: Bea & Roy MacDonald, Audrey Price both of Sussex; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a large circle of friends. Harris was predeceased by: his parents; son-in-law Jim Geldart; grandson Brayden McEwen; great-grandson Chiam Savoie; siblings: Frieda Sherwood and Eric McEwen; and brothers-in-law: Warren Jones and Robert Keys. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Sussex Select Funeral Home where the family will receive visitors on Thursday, December 30th - 7:00 – 9:00 PM, and Friday, December 31st - 3:00 to 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the Carsonville Head of Millstream United Church, Carsonville NB at 12:00 Noon, Linda Fuller DLM officiating with a private burial at the Carsonville Cemetery. No Flowers by request. Memorial Donations can be made to the Carsonville Head of Millstream United Church Renovation Fund, the Carsonville Cemetery or charity of choice. Sussex Select Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
