Obituary of Ora Buchanan

Ora Vincent Buchanan of Sussex, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Sussex Health Centre on December 21, 2016. Ora was born on December 24, 1924 at New Line, NB, a son of the late Elmer and Alice (McFarland) Buchanan. Ora lived life to the fullest! He believed in love and the work of the Holy Spirit in his life. He also believed in speaking his mind and people loved him for it. He became a master at most things he put his hand at. In his younger days, Ora worked at Franblow’s grocery store in Sussex, N.B. He drove truck for many local employers. He ventured out to Toronto, Ontario and worked at Firestone Tire for six months. He then came back home and married his best friend, Clara. He spent eleven years at Atlantic Wholesalers and farmed for thirteen years in Dutch Valley, N.B. He began auctioneering in 1964. He helped out with the weekly livestock auctions at the Sussex & Studholm Agricultural Society and went on to become livestock manager. When Lloyd Murray retired, Ora became General Manager for the next four years and retired January.1, 1990. Ora was been a member of St. Mark’s Anglican church since 1934. Throughout his fellowship there he was a warden, vestry member, lay reader, as well as chairman of the hall committee in the 1980’s. He was a Boy Scout leader for years and a member of so many different groups within the Sussex community. He belonged to Kiwanis Golden K’s, Waterford 50 plus, Happy Go Lucky Fiddlers, Maritime Fiddler’s Association, and the Experimental Aircraft Association… just to name a few. He fit so much into his 92 years here on earth and still found time to hunt, fish, look after the Sussex Corner rink, play hockey, make maple syrup, four wheel, travel, fly his own airplane and play fiddle at many special care homes. Ora felt that the Lord blessed him with a long and rewarding life with a loving marriage of 65 years, four ‘extra-special’ children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was looking forward to meeting his first great-great grandchild due any day now. In Ora’s words, “Who could ask for more?!” Ora is survived by his daughters; Harriet (Fred) Liddle of Penobsquis, Betty Ann Buchanan of Sussex and Martha (David) Chown of Keirstead Mountain; son Clarence Buchanan of Millbrook; his girl-next-door Connie Kendall; his grandchildren; Melody Kane (Greg), Amy Buchanan(Sam), Kristen Chown (Alex) and Courtney Chown (Jesse), Mark Kane(Patty), Bailey Chown and Colby Chown and 6 great grandchildren: Elizabeth (Joseph), Brandon, Brittany (Dylan), Nicholas, Violet, and Tyber; as well as by a multitude of friends. Besides his parents Ora was predeceased by loving wife of 65 years, Clara (nee Proctor); his grandsons: Garnet Swan & Will Buchanan; and his twin brothers:Aubrey & Alden. Arrangements are in the professional care of Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex, NB (506)433-2133, from where visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm.
