Obituary of Donald James Alexander

Alexander, Donald James “Jim”, of Sussex died at the Sussex Health Center on July 15, 2015. Jim was born to the late Donald Ross, and Helen Margaret (Givan) Alexander, July 24, 1928, in Sussex. In October 1944, Jim started working part time at Bart Yerxa’s Store in the meat department. Jim graduated from Sussex High School in 1945. After graduation he worked full time for Bart and continued to work at this store when it was sold to George Horton. In 1951, Jim moved to Hamilton, Ontario and started working for Dominion Stores in the following locations in Ontario: Saint Catherine, Welland, Brampton, Kitchener, and Thunder Bay. In 1963 Jim was promoted to District Meat Manager for Alberta. When Safeway bought Dominion Stores in Alberta in 1974, Dominion transferred Jim to Manitoba as District Meat Manager and later promoted him to Merchandise Manager for Newfoundland. Jim retired from Dominion in 1978 and moved back to Sussex. He bought Dunfield’s Store in Penobsquis in 1979 and renamed it Alex Esso Mart. This business included: gas pumps, a convenience store and later the Tiger Lilly Camp Ground. Jim is survived by his wife and “Best Friend” Mary; his brother Beverley Charles Wallace (Phyllis); nieces: Deborah MacPherson (Gordon) of Calgary, Beth Rutty (Dean) of Ontario and Jackie Ranahan (Jim) of Ontario; Mary’s sons: Ira (Jody), Adam and David; grandsons: Reece and Chase McComb, and step grandson Daniel Anger. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Rd, Sussex, New Brunswick, (506) 433-2133. As per Jim’s request there will be no visitation. The funeral service will be held on Monday July 20, 2015 at 11:00 am at Trinity Anglican Church with The Ven. David Barrett presiding. Interment will take place in Trinity Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to Trinity Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
