Obituary of Ella M. Walker

It is with great sadness that her family announces the death of Ella Matilda Walker of Sussex, which occurred at the Sussex Health Centre on November 10th, 2012 after a brief decline in health. Ella was born at Ward’s Creek, NB on March 1st 1917. She was the first child of the late David Oscar and Ida Sophia (Riedle) Walker. Ella never married and is survived by her brothers Frank (Edna) Walker of New Line Road, NB and Charles (Jean) Walker of Belwood, Ont.; her sisters-in-law, Margaret Walker Greer of New Line Road and Evelyn Walker of St. Stephen, NB; many nieces and nephews, as well as many, many dear friends and her church family. Ella was predeceased by her brothers George and John Walker and her sisters Lillie McHaffie(Claire) and Mabel Danson(Bill). Ella was a graduate of Sussex High School and NB Normal School attaining a First Class License Superior Division. She was a professional teacher for 36 years, teaching at Upper and Lower Ward’s Creek, Walker Settlement, Sussex and Oromocto Schools. Ella interrupted her teaching career periodically when she worked for 4 years in Ottawa as a civil servant during World War II, making many life-long friends. She studied Business Education at Acadia in 1959/60 and she studied Christian Education and Life of Paul for a year at Gordon College in Beverly, Mass. in 1967/68. After her retirement from teaching, Ella served as a missionary/teacher in Kenya for 4 years through Canadian Baptist Ministries. Returning from Kenya, she settled in Sussex and was very active in Read Sussex, Lauback Literacy, teaching adults to read; Red Cross, and the Sussex Baptist Church. At church, she helped with Women’s Missionary Service, Sunday School, Daily Vacation Bible School and Little Lights. Ella was an enthusiastic volunteer with CNIB and was awarded the 2010 Harold Hatheway Distinguished Volunteer Award in recognition of her service and support. Ella enjoyed going to Baptist Conventions and keeping in touch with other active missionaries, especially in Kenya. Ella will always be remembered for her joyful smile and laugh; her energy and good heart. Everyone who met her liked her immediately. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sussex Select Community Funeral Home. As per Ella’s request, there will be no visitation held. The funeral service will be held on November 14, 2012 at 11:00am at the Sussex Baptist Church with Dr. Leo Gallant presiding. Interment will take place at the Kirkhill Cemetery.
