Obituary of Mabel Verna Danson

It is with great sadness that our family announces the death of Mabel Verna Danson of Sussex, which occurred at the Sussex Health Centre on July 29, 2007 after a brave fight against cancer. Mabel was born at Ward’s Creek, NB on September 6, 1924. She was the daughter of the late David and Sophia (Riedle) Walker. She is survived by her daughter Carol Danson of Ottawa, son William (Debbie) Danson of Ottawa and daughter Judy (Glenn) Wood of Plumweseep; 6 grandchildren, Michael (Cassie) Wood, Jo-Elle Wood Wicke (Jason), Brian Danson (Faun), Clinton Danson (Keira), Gregory Danson and Heidi Danson; 3 great grandchildren, Sophie and Carson Wood and Brandon Danson; her sister Ella Walker, her brothers Frank Walker (Edna), Charlie Walker (Jean); her sisters-in-law Margaret Walker and Evelyn Walker; many nieces and nephews, as well as many, many dear friends. Besides her parents, Mabel was predeceased by her husband William Danson (1955), sister Lillie McHaffie (Clair) and brothers George and John Walker. Mabel was a graduate of Sussex High School, The Provincial Normal School and received her Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Education from UNB. She was a professional teacher for 34 years and taught at Sussex Elementary most of those years. She also taught at Hammondvale and Rockville Schools. After her husband died, she worked at the family business, Strand Theatre, and later after retiring from teaching she was very successful as a real estate agent in Sussex. Never to be idle, she also worked as a Welcome Wagon representative. Mabel was an enthusiastic volunteer for many organizations and was instrumental at starting and leading a Seniors Fitness group for 20 years. She will be remembered for her enthusiasm and energy; she loved her family, friends, her walking group, cards, quilting and social gatherings. Her approach to teaching was to find the strengths of each individual student and encourage them in their accomplishments. She taught life skills as well as academics to grades 3, 4 and 5. Mabel was strong in her faith and participated in many church activities. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433-2133) on Tuesday 7-9PM and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9PM. The funeral service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church on Thursday August 2, 2007 at 11:00AM. Interment at Kirk Hill Cemetery Sussex, Friday at 10:00AM.
