James Hornbrook

Obituary of James Hornbrook

James Robert Hornbrook, 96, of Mount Middleton, passed away at his residence on November 4, 2011. Born in Mount Middleton, he was the son of the late George and Lucy (Thompson) Hornbrook. James is survived by his daughter Elizabeth (Hoyt) Pearson of Highfield; his sons: Ronald (Nancy) of Mount Middleton and Robert (Barbara) of Edmonton, AB; grandchildren: Dwayne Pearson (Diana), Denise Chisari (Joe), James Pearson (Jane), Michelle Hornbrook (Scott), Joseph Hornbrook (Dianne), Adam Hornbrook (Jennifer), Matthew Hornbrook (Brenda), Matthew Hornbrook (Joca) and Stephen Hornbrook; great grandchildren: Kyle, Jared, Liam, Ethan, Gwen, Emma, Evan, Ian, Owen, Andrew, Ty, Haley, Chase, Alex, Michael, Grace and Jacob; his sister Ruth Campbell (Carl) of Saint John; and special homemaker, Dianna Carhart. Besides his parents, James was predeceased by his wife, Melva Hornbrook (Aiton); his sisters: Mary Heppell, Bernice Hornbrook and Laura Hornbrook. James attended NSAC in Truro, and spent most of his life on the farm, taking a great interest in all aspects of farming, raising Ayrshire cattle, and traveling to many shows. He was active in 4-H as a member and a leader, winning a trip to the Royal Winter Fair in 1933 with the swine club. He was an honourary member & director of the NB and Canadian Ayrshire Assoc.; president and director of Sussex Cheese & Butter; member & director of the Sussex & Studholm Agriculture Society, being honoured as the Frank Walker member of the year in 2010; and was a life member of the Ayrshire Breeders Association of Canada. In years past, James and his wife opened their home for Farm Vacations; many people went through their door and left with a better knowledge of a dairy farm, and needless to say, many left with a few more pounds than they had arrived with. James enjoyed reading westerns and playing 45’s at weekly card parties, but above all, he loved his family, and was very proud of everything they did; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of great joy for him. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at Sussex Select Community Funeral Home; the funeral service will be held on Friday, November 11 at 2:00pm with Rev. Linda Fuller presiding at the Wesley United Church, Berwick. Interment will be held in the Wesley United Church Cemetery, Berwick. Donations to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. On-line condolences are available at: www.sussexfh.com
