Obituary of Joseph William Kincaid

JOSEPH WILLIAM KINCAID - The death of Joseph William Kincaid of Sussex occurred on September 10, 2009 at the Sussex Health Center. Born in Norton, on September 12, 1924 he was the only son of the late Milford Adam Kincaid and Pearl Margaret Slattery. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Medical Corps of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Thomas University in 1950 and a Bachelor of Education degree from St. Thomas University in 1975. Joseph was a teacher at St. Thomas Academy and Nackawic High School before adding duties as supervising principal of schools in Loggieville, Norton, Boiestown, and Elsipogtog (Big Cove) First Nation. He then settled in Rexton where he was Principal and a teacher at Rexton Elementary School from 1971 until his retirement in 1987. That year, he moved to Sussex and has since resided on Magnolia Avenue. Joseph was a devout Roman Catholic and was active in a number of church and volunteer organizations. He was a past President of the Parish Council for the Immaculate Conception Church in Rexton and St. Francis Xavier Church in Sussex. He was formerly a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus; Director of the Kent Liberal Association, Chairman of the Canadian Cancer Society (Rexton); President of the Kingston Hospital Board (Rexton); and President and founding committee member of the former Katimavik School for handicapped children in Richibucto. He was also formerly a member of the Lion's Club (Rexton) and the Blind Society (Kings County). Joseph was an honourable, gentle, patient, sentimental, and private man. More intellectual than handy, he will be remembered for his love of reading. Joseph is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jacqueline Gertrude (Pontbriand) Kincaid of Sussex; children: Stephen Kincaid of Rexton, Peggy (Leonard) Foster of Green Mountain; Paul of Brampton, ON; John of Mt. Middleton; and Peter (Bonnie) of Fredericton; grandchildren: Christine (Clarence) Levers of Newmarket, ON; Joseph (Shirley) Kincaid of Toronto; Christopher (Lisa) Foster of Irish Settlement; Matthew Foster of Fredericton; and Kayleigh, William, Laura, Megan and Patricia Kincaid of Fredericton. He is also survived by 4 great grandchildren: Kayla & Karah Levers, Madison Kincaid and Hope Foster; sisters Madeline (Robert) Forgrave, Agnes (Alexander) Simpson, and Shirley (Lawrence) Barton, all of Sussex; and several nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by son Cpl. Joseph (Gail) Kincaid of CFB. Trenton, ON; and sisters Catherine (Frank) Stackhouse of Sussex and Vivian (David) Hawkes of Hampton. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Select Funeral Home (433-2133), 21 Aiton Road, Sussex, from where visitation will be held on Saturday evening from 7-9 pm and Sunday from 7-9 pm. The Royal Canadian Legion will have a tribute service in the funeral home on Sunday evening at 6:45 pm. The funeral mass will be held on Monday at 10 am at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church.
