Obituary of Melbourne James Crawford
Melbourne James Crawford, 92, passed away at the Sussex Health Center on April 3, 2012. Born in Hammondvale, he was the son of the late Syme and Dora (nee Crawford) Crawford. He worked in St. John for Crystal Ice Company in the early 40’s then moved to Hamilton, Ontario and found work at the International Harvester Farm Machinery Co where he spent the rest of his working career. After retirement, Mel and Freda moved back to N.B. ending up in Moncton and in 2006 moved to Sussex Corner, living at the Lion’s Villa. While living in Moncton, Mel and Freda both belonged to many senior groups, Mel enjoyed Lawn Bowling with the Moncton Lawn Bowling Club, Mel’s team won Provincial Champs. Mel and Freda were both swimmers, they belonged to the St. Pat’s Senior Centre and used their in door pool everyday. They loved to travel be it by plane, bus, train or by car, they kept the tires hot. A 32 day bus trip to California was a retirement gift to himself and Freda, they had many car trips to the USA and down east to NB to visit family and friends each summer. Mel enjoyed his trip to Jolly Old England with his sisters-in-law and Brothers-in-law, Mel was always ready to travel. Mel; also enjoyed listening and playing music, he was really good on the harmonica. He entertained many people on the bus trips, at family reunions or just at home. Mel was a people person, loved to be around people, Mel enjoyed life. He is survived by his loving wife, Freda (nee Kilpatrick) Crawford; sister, Myrtle (Leonard) Baxter of Saint John; brothers-in-law: Ernest (Sylvia) Pagett of Markhamville, Cecil Kilpatrick of Sussex Corner, and Sandy McCullum of Hamilton, ON.; sister-in-law, Kay Kilpatrick of Sussex Corner; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Melbourne was predeceased by his brothers: Donnie, Clifford, and Murray Crawford; sisters: Lottie McCullum and Freda Pagett. There will be no visitation as per Mel’s request. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 2:00pm with Rev. Gene Fisher presiding at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home.
