Obituary of Leonard Carhart

Leonard Carhart of Carsonville, NB, passed away with courage and dignity and with his family by his side, at the Sussex Health Centre on November 26th, 2011. He was born in Bodmin, England in 1926, and in 1928 his family boarded a ship and sailed to Canada to begin a new life. They settled in Carsonville where Leonard resided for the remainder of his life. As a young man he worked in lumber camps, worked as a carpenter, and helped out on the family farm. In 1945 he married his love, Betty, and together they raised their six children. He drove the local kids to Carsonville School in his school van, and when one room schools closed, he started driving the big yellow bus which he continued to do until his retirement. Leonard loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, picking fiddleheads, driving his ATV, and just going for long walks. He could fix anything, and if you couldn’t buy it, he could make it. He loved his family, and getting together with the boys. He looked forward to visits from the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always had treats and silly jokes for them. They loved him in return. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Roger) Brown of Carsonville; his five sons: Jim (Carolyn) of Sussex, Mike (Sally) of Carsonville, Sydney (Tracy) of Sussex, Andy (Annette) of Southfield, and Keith (Nicole) of Norton; fifteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward (Buck) and sister-in-law, Barb of Carsonville; and three sisters: Ruth of Carsonville, Gladys Donovan and Ida McKnight of Sussex. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty, his parents, Thomas and Emily Carhart; five brothers: Tom, Murray, Charlie, Bill, and Roy; and two sisters: Joyce and Elizabeth. He will be sadly missed. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Sussex Select Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex, from where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 29th, 2011 at 1:00 pm. Interment will be held in the Carsonville Cemetery. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
