Obituary of Gertrude Phillips

Mrs. Gertrude Leona Phillips, of Sussex, passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on September 20th, 2017. Gertrude was born in Pole Hill, Hartland and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lottie (Hartin) Clark.

She was also the wife of the late Ray Phillips who passed away in 2010. Gertrude went to school in Lower Windsor, and then went on to New Brunswick Business College in Fredericton. After graduation, she lived in Moncton and worked at Eatons. Gertrude met her husband Ray, who was originally from O'Leary, PEI and after a short courtship, they were married on October 30, 1950 in her parents home in Coldstream, NB. They enjoyed 60 years together. Gertrude spent the next years raising her boys. Gert enjoyed traveling. She and Ray drove across Canada and the United States. They spent two winters in Florida and two winters in British Columbia, visiting Ray's sister. Gert loved camping in their camper van and spent three summers in St. Martins.She was famous for her beautiful seamstress work. She made her own clothes and many outfits for the family. She kept busy with her knitting and needlepoint as well.

Gertrude will be lovingly remembered by her sons: Sheldon and Jannie Phillips of Saint John, Gordon and Connie Phillips of Plumweseep, Evan and Elizabeth Phillips of Markhamville and Ralph and Jane Phillips of Sussex; grandchildren: Carrie Lord (Matt) of Quispamsis, Pamela Hanrahan (Ian) of Rusagonis, Michael Phillips of Barrie, Tanya Warman (Kent) of Markhamville, Jennifer Godsoe (Tim) of McGregor Brook, Roy Nairn of Saint John, Lisa Nairn of Saint John, Scott Veysey of Fredericton and Jill Veysey of Saint John; great grandchildren: Alexa Godsoe, Hailey Warman, Caleb Warman and Aiden Lord; her sisters-in-law Ann Phillips, Doris Phillips and Pansy Phillips as well as several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ray and her brothers, Milo Clark and Stanley Clark.

Arrangements are in the professional care of Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex, NB (506) 433-2133 from where visitation will be held Friday, September 22nd, 2017 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. A service celebrating Gertrude’s life will be held at the Sussex Select Community Chapel on Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 at 11:00am. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.
