Obituary of R.L. Joseph Walsh

Capt. WALSH, R.L. Joseph, B. Comm; CD.Ret’d The death of Joe Walsh of Sussex occurred at the Kiwanis Nursing Home on April 27, 2011 at the age of 87. Born in Sheet Harbour, NS, he was a son of the late Louis and Violet (Kenny) Walsh of Halifax and the husband of the late Margaret (Hennigar) Walsh who passed away in 2008. In his youth, Joe enjoyed playing hockey and football and swimming, but it was in boxing that he excelled, with a hard left jab, that carried him to the Canadian Army Western Canada Championship in 1944 as a bantamweight. During WWII he served with the Canadian Grenadier Guards, a tank regiment with the fourth Armoured Brigade and saw action in the Hochwald Gap, Winnenthal and Friesoythe. After returning home Joe returned to school, graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from St. Mary’s University and rejoined the army in the Canadian Army Pay Corps. He retired early in the rank of Captain to take employment with the Federal Government as an administrative officer with the Department of Forestry and subsequently with No.8 Regional Audit Group of the Deputy Minister of National Defense Audit Branch, until retirement in Fredericton in 1978. He then served for several years as Comptroller of St. Thomas University in Fredericton and later as Chair of the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors of Wolfville Co-Op Habitat. He was a past president of the Hampton 50 Plus Club, a past member of the Fredericton Garrison Club and the United Service Institute and was a member of the Overseas Association 6087-22 Canadian Armoured Regiment, Canadian Grenadier Guards. In later years Joe took pleasure in spending time with his many grandchildren and taking an avid interest in sports. Joe is survived by his three daughters; Louise Poirier of Halifax, Karen (Daniel) Duguay of Sussex Corner and Angela (Steven) Boyd of Fredericton, two sons; Brian (Sue) of Nauwigewauk and Derek (Lucie) of Edmonton, fourteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren with a third on the way, five sisters and five brothers and several nieces and nephews. Joe also leaves behind many cherished friends. In addition to his parents and his wife of 57 years Margaret, he was predeceased by his sister Maureen and son-in-law John Poirier. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433-2133) on Friday from 4-7PM. Sussex Branch#20 of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a Tribute on Friday at 3:45PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday April 30, 2011 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Sussex at 11:00AM, with Father Arnie Hachey presiding. Interment will be at St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Hampton. Donations made to the Sussex Dialysis Unit or the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
