Obituary of Carol Smith

Carol was taken from us on September 3, 2005 at the age of 61 after a short illness. She was born at Albert, NB, the daughter of the late James and Katherine (Nelson) Preston. She leaves to mourn her husband Jack, a son Kirk and friend Carol and daughter Nancy and friend Ralph, grandchildren Erica and friend Andrew and Josh Fanjoy, a brother Ed Preston and wife Sandy, a brother in law Dave and wife Faye Smith, nephew Ed and niece Christa and her close aunt Margaret. She will be dearly missed. Carol was keen on keeping records and to that end kept a daily diary until she became very ill. Her recording of events is mainly a chronicle of everyday happenings, daily temperatures, who visited, timetable of house chores and bird life. Birding was her passion from when she was a Girl Guide in Albert until today. It is important to feed the birds and provide a habitat for their comfort. She was a Brownie leader in the past years and enjoyed being a birding badge tester for Brownies and Guides. A major birding event was the visit of cardinals to her feeders. She knew all the various kinds of birds and was always pleased to be asked by others, “what kind of bird is that?” Carol was shy by nature and did not find it easy to be comfortable in new company but when she made friends they were for life. The Perfect Circle motor home club inspired her to be proactive in group activities although she was a past president of the Sussex Jaycettes and a director of the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta. She was a past director of the motor home club. The fellowship and support of this group is heartwarming. The planning of travel and camping destinations made her so happy and made others happy to plan with her. She kept accurate records of travel sequences when going by motor home. For year after year she could pinpoint your travel position and distance traveled and overnight destinations compared to other years, as good as GPS. She loved to dress up in her red hats and purple dresses and go to lunch with the Women on Wheels red hat ladies. What fun. Carol was a homebody. She worked in sales for a few years and taking Jack's Irving calls but her interest was looking after her flowerbeds. She claimed not to have a green thumb but always had a beautiful display of red geraniums. Family dinners with the children and their friends were an important event as were birthdays and special holidays when everybody could get together. Cooking lunch on a driftwood fire on the beach at St. Martins, making a fridge in the snow at the woods camp, a little shopping trip across the border or a glass of wine with friends. What more could you ask for? The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex (506-433-2133), on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 7th, 2005 at St. Paul's United Church at 2:00 PM. Interment at Kirk Hill Cemetery, Sussex. As expressions of sympathy donations made to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
