Obituary of Walter Arnold Graves
It brings great sadness to the family of Walter Graves to announce his peaceful passing at the Sussex Health Centre on March 5, 2014 at 3:10 am. His parents, Walter Arnold and Pearl (nee Killam) Graves gave us a wonderful husband, father, grandfather “Pup”, and great-grandfather “Papa”, uncle, and friend. Walter is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Helen Graves (nee Boss); daughters: Shelley Fraser, Heather Bastarache ; his son Allen Graves; step-daughters: Cheryl Embree (Vince) and Faith Comeau. He was a special Gramp to Justin, Robbie (Stephanie), Rhonda (Shannon) and Rachel, and a very special Pup to Tyler Embree (Fantasha) and Amanda Dee Comeau (Jayson). Also left to mourn are his pride and joys, his grandchildren: Sarah and Cody Fraser and Breanna and Colin Allen, Hallie and Jolen Melanson; his namesake and apple of his eye, Ace Embree and Jayden and Asher LeBlanc. Left with sadness but great memories is his childhood friend, Charlie Curtis (Marvella), who will miss him dearly. A very important family, the Koopman’s in Holland, especially Quinton, held a special place in his heart and are grieving his passing. He is also survived by his special nephew, Sheldon Black (Mary), and other nephews and nieces, and many friends who were very important to Walter. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Sherry, his step-daughter Shellee Alward, his parents, grandparents, only sister Christine Black (George), and also by his wonderful friend, Ralph Green. Walter was a nurse, a mechanic, a truck driver, and a computer installer in cars until an accident in 1978 left him blind in his good eye, being born blind in the other eye, but blindness did not slow him down. He loved the woods and every opportunity found him there with family and friends. He was a kind, compassionate and very knowledgeable man, and a great mentor to many of the young men in the area: Joel Dunfield, Shawn Bettle, Tyler Freeze, Chris Butcher, Darren McGinnis, Marcel Mondoux, John Corbett, and grandson, Tyler Embree; and also to anyone else needing advice on fixing cars, trucks, ATV’s, or small engines. He encouraged safety in hunting, and was pleased to help the study to earn their license and to treat a gun with the utmost care and safety. Walter was an amateur radio operator, a member of the St. John Ambulance, Search and Rescue, and an Orange Lodge member in Sussex and Springhill, NS. Though he is gone, our wonderful memories will live on. Thank-you, Walter, for allowing us to love you. You will always be so missed. In keeping with Walter’s wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex, NB (506-433-2133), from where the family will receive family and friends on Sunday March 9, 2014 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Donations to CNIB New Brunswick or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
