Obituary of Ora Doherty
The passing of Ora Doherty, Roachville, NB occured at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex, NB on Saturday, April 7, 2012.
Born on October 21, 1926 at East Riverside, NB, Ora was the last surviving member of the family of the late J. Burton and Nina (Parlee) Doherty, which included his sisters Gertrude O'Brien (Abner) of Sussex and Helen Norrad (Harold) of Sussex; and brother Roy Doherty (Phyllis), also of Sussex.
He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 62 years, Phyllis (Hayes) Doherty, their only daughter Dawn Gard of Roachville, his son in law Steven Gard of Grand Lake and two grandsons Kody and Aaron Gard; sister in law Phyllis Thompson of Sussex as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ora was a member of the Sussex Anglican Church.
Ora was employed by Canadian National Railways as Gang Foreman and snowplow operator for the entire Atlantic Region, retiring in 1983. He then became a transfer driver of Ryder Truck Rentals for Jim Jewkes, Sussex Division.
Ora and Phyllis were caretakers of seniors at Anglican Church Homes in Sussex for several years. Ora was also a volunteer van driver for seniors of the Kiwanis Nursing Home and a member of the Board of Directors of Roachville Community Hall devoting many volunteer hours to his community.
Ora enjoyed his summer cottage on Grand Lake with friends and family and took pride in his grandsons horseback riding, ball games and bowling tournaments; he enjoyed bus tours and weekly bowling and card parties with his many friends.
The Doherty family would like to thank Dr. Symington, the Staff of the Kiwanis Nursing Home and the Sussex Health Center for the wonderful care and comfort given to Ora.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506) 433-1176. There will be no visitation or service as per Ora's request.
