With sadness our family announces the death of Harriet Folkins, of Sussex, who passed away on August 31st, 2012.
As was her wish and hope, Harriet died at home surrounded by loving family.
Born on the Freeze family farm in Penobsquis on July 19th, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Edith (nee Hall) Freeze.
She is survived by her sister, Hazel MacLeod of Riverview; sister-in-law, Gladys Freeze of Penobsquis; nieces and nephews: Gregory MacLeod (Chris Van Der Graesen) of Antwerp, Belgium ; Robert MacLeod (Nancy) of Sussex; Jane MacLeod Mann (Orville Mann) of Sumerside, P.E.I.; David Freeze (Tracy) of Penobsquis and Catherine Freeze of Charlottetown ,P.E.I.; great nieces and great nephews: Peter MacLeod, Laura MacLeod, Emily MacLeod, Jacob Freeze, Hannah Freeze, Sam Freeze and John Freeze; as well as several cousins.
She took great interest and pride in her family and followed their lives very closely and was supportive of them all of her life. Besides her parents, Harriet was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Folkins; brother, George Freeze, and brother-in-law Malcolm “Mac” MacLeod . Harriet was an RN graduating from the Saint John General Nursing School in 1948 and attending Dalhousie Medical School in 1967. She nursed in Victoria B.C. and London ,Ontario before returning to nurse in Public Health in New Brunswick. She retired from nursing in 1970 when she married Arthur and they enjoyed many years together. Harriet loved her home town of Sussex and was an active member of the community. She was well known as a loyal cancer volunteer who over her years made many home visitations to give encouragement, strength and hope to those recently diagnosed with the disease she had survived herself. She was knowledable and passionate about current events, an active gardener and naturalist, and an involved member of St. Paul’s United Church in Sussex. Harriet possessed an inner strength and will that she demonstrated by overcoming a number of serious illnesses over her lifetime . Always interested in being up to date she learned how to use a computer at the age of 84. Her curiosity and sheer joy of life attracted and held the attention and commitment of an eclectic, diverse and wonderfully interesting circle of friends that Harriet Folkins enjoyed greatly. Harriet had a keen sense of humour and a wonderful laugh that we all loved and will miss very much.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sussex Select Community Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 2nd, 2012 at 2:00pm at the St. Paul’s United Church, 420 Main Street, Sussex.
