Obituary of Hugh Meehan

Meehan, Hugh, 90, of Smiths Creek, passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 15, 2013. Born on August 18, 1922 in Donegal, Ireland, he was a son of the late Robert and Adelaide (nee Buchanan) Meehan. Hugh, the youngest of twelve children, and his family immigrated to Canada in 1928, settling in Hammondvale. He was a member of the NB 8th Hussars, Sussex, and was a 35 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 20. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Dexter’s Construction, Modern Construction, and Corbett & Cooper before his retirement. Hugh was a kind, loving, caring man who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, and he took great pride in all his endeavours. He enjoyed winters spent in Florida, travelling, camping, hunting, dancing, and playing the violin and the accordion. Hugh is survived by his loving wife, Elsie Meehan (nee Payne); his son, Robert “Bob” Meehan (Barb)of Alberta, and by his daughter, Sharon Lewis (Bryan) of Vancouver; his step-son, Carl Doyle (Linda) of Sussex; his sister, Isabel Cunningham of Hampton; his grandchildren: Stephen Meehan of Niagara Falls, Carla Doyle (Wayne), Carlene Doyle (Noel), Charlene Adair (Shane) and Lacey Doyle (Tyler); great-grandchildren: Michael, Wyatt, and Hope; as well as by several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Besides his parents, Hugh was predeceased by his son, Gary Meehan; his brothers: Daniel, Robert, Moses, Andrew and James; his sisters: Eileen MacDonald, Margaret Robertson, Molly Mallory, Adelaide Sherwood, and Sarah McMackin. Visitation will be held on Monday February 18, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm; the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 20 will be holding a tribute service on Monday at 6:30 pm; the funeral service will be held on Tuesday February 19, 2013 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Gene Fisher presiding, all in Sussex Select Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road, Sussex. Interment will be held in Trinity Cemetery at a later date.
