Obituary of Edward McGouey
Edward Gerard McGouey was born in Saint John, NB on April 20th, 1920. Growing up in the North End, he attended St Peters School for Boys. He was the son of the late James and Alice (Scott) McGouey and the husband of the late Phyllis Catherine (Smardon) McGouey who passed away in 1993.
In 1940, Ed joined the Army and then the Marine Corp. in 1942. In February 1944, Edward married Phyllis and they spent 49 wonderful years together. In 1945, Ed was discharged and returned to Saint John where he worked for many years at Snowflake Lime, McAvity's and driving truck. In 1952, they moved to Hillsdale where he worked in the woods and Canada Packers in Sussex, DOT and a dynamite man. In 1985, Ed retired from the DOT and lived in Hillsdale until February 2005, when he moved into Ridgewood Veterans Wing in Saint John.
He enjoyed his new family and friends at Ridgewood; he knew all the staff by name. He liked watching hockey and other sports on TV, he also loved spending time with his grandchildren especially his great granddaughter, Kaylee.
Edward is survived by two sons: Donnie and his wife Pat of Highfield, Greg and his wife Bella of South Branch; five grandchildren: Scott and Shawn McGouey, Will Alward, Valerie Pigeon, Susan Folkins and her husband Jo; five great grandchildren: Kaylee, Amanda, Anthony, Jamie and Katelyn; two brothers: Donald McGouey of Picadilly and Billy McGouey of Saint John; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Edward McGouey of Ridgewood Veterans Hospital Saint John and formerly of Hillsdale passed away at his residence on January 23, 2008.
Edward was predeceased by two brothers: John who passed away in 1944 and Gregory who passed away in 1990 and by his sister: Theresa Brown who passed away in 2004.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Friday 2-4 and 7-9pm .
A service celebrating Mr. McGouey’s life will be held from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 11:00 am.
