Obituary of Joyce Elizabeth Hazen

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Joyce Elizabeth Hazen announce her passing at the Kiwanis Nursing Home on November 30, 2022 at the age of 85.

Joyce had two great joys in her life, the first being serving the Lord which was easily seen through her devotion to teaching Sunday School, church choir, playing the organ in church and being one of the founders of the Sussex (Wesleyan) Christian School from where she would retire after teaching grade 1 for several years.

Her second greatest joy was of course her grandchildren and spending anytime she could with them. She loved children in general whether it was CYC, kindergarten, Sunday School, directing the girl’s camp at Beulah or just giving of her time to guide and teach them.

Joyce and Francis loved camping; in the earlier years it was tenting until they were able to upgrade to a trailer. They also loved snowmobiling - any opportunities to spend time with family having fun together.

Joyce was generous to a fault, anything, and everything she had, she would give to others if they were in need. She had a beautiful and brilliant smile and a heart so kind that it could not be matched. She will be missed by all those whose lives she has touched.

She will live on in the hearts of her loving husband of 63 years, Francis; her daughters: Jennifer Hazen and her husband Mike McNamara of Penobsquis and Heather Moss and her husband Stephen of Hillsborough; her grandsons:  Jason Moss and Jeremy Moss, Jeremy’s wife Sarah and; her great grandchildren: Danica and Brendan; sister in law Persis Starkey-Steeves, brother in law George Hazen and his wife Janet; as well as her sisters: Roberta and Deborah;  and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by an infant daughter, Beth; her maternal grandmother, Dolly Byfield; her parents: Peter and Olive (Byfield) Maxwell; her brother, Eugene; her sisters: Doreen and Marilyn.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex (506) 433-1176.
