Obituary of Doris Jean Alexander

It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Jean Alexander announces her passing, which occurred on April 2, 2023 at the Kiwanis Nursing Home in Sussex. Born in Sussex, NB, on December 16, 1945, she was a daughter of the Late Frank and Lily (Freeze) Erb.

Doris is survived by her loving husband, David of Sussex; her sisters: Marcia (Terry) of Apohaqui, and Chrystene of California. Doris is also survived by her nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Doris was predeceased by her brothers: Albert and Doug.

Doris was born in Sussex. She graduated from Sussex High School and then from teachers’ college at UNB in Fredericton. She taught one year in New Brunswick and then went to Toronto, where she taught in a variety of grades and schools for 30 years. During her time there, she was on loan from her school board to the D.N.D. and taught at the armed forces base in Lahr, Germany for five years. While there, she travelled extensively and, among other places, visited Israel, South Africa, Kenya, and Russia.

While in Toronto, she met her husband of 42 years, David. When they had both completed their careers in Toronto, they retired to Sussex. Here, Doris was very active in the community. She was on various committees including the Canada Day Committee and the Sussex Area Community Foundation. She was active in her church and was a member of the Legion where she received her 25 year pin.

In her later years, Doris suffered from dementia and passed away at the Kiwanis Nursing Home where she was a resident for 9 years. Doris received wonderful, loving care while at Kiwanis. I (David) wish to thank the staff for all they did for Doris. The staff should be commended for what they do for all their residents.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Dr. Sussex, NB (506-433-1176). A celebration of Doris' life will take place on Tuesday, June 20 at 2:00pm from the Wallace Community Chapel. A graveside service for Doris will take place at a later time.

Donations in memory of Doris may be made to Kiwanis Nursing Home or a charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences to the family and donations may be made through wallacefuneralhome.com.
