Obituary of John Clare

It is with heavy hearts that the family of John David Clare announces his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on August 5, 2024 at the age of 82.

Born in Sidney, Nova Scotia on November 19, 1941; he was the son of the late James and Sadie (Parsons) Clare.

On January 8, 1966; he married the love of his life, Carolyn (Coutts) and together they would build their lives, grow their family and celebrate their love story for 58 years. He loved dancing with Carolyn, especially to Me and Bobby McGee.

John was a hardworking man, with a heart of gold. Known famously as the smoking pharmacist, in his white coat standing on the corner outside Sharp’s Drug Store. He was always up for a chat, a laugh or a hug. He retired at the age of 75 from a job that did proudly and loved deeply for over 57 years. Still missing all his customers that he had a chance to serve over the years.

He was a past member of the board of Crosswinds, enjoyed his time bartending for the Hampton RCMP and Halifax Police and a past member of the Hampton Jaycees, of course not to be confused with the John Clare Fan Club.

John loved to spend his time at his favorite spot - Sussex Ale Works and he never met a beer he didn’t like. He loved camping and fishing and especially loved to laugh and tease and tell a good story. John was small town famous, a man that if you met once – you never forgot. He will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he has touched.

He will live on in the hearts of his loving wife, Carolyn; his daughters: Juanita Carhart and her husband Bruce of Apohaqui, Heather Richard and her husband Greg of Sussex and Diana Clare and Ed Smith of Kingston Peninsula; his grandchildren: Melissa Ferguson and her husband Walter, Brent McKenna, Brandon Richard and Craig Obermeier, Kristen Green and her husband Devin, Stephanie McFarlane and her husband Jeremy, Josh Gullison and Rachel Curtis and Holly Brisson and her husband Adam; his great grandchildren: Hunter, Hannah, Noah, Chloe, Amelia, Jacob, Quinn, Everett, Rylie, Arizona and Summer; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Clare.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex (506-433-1176). At John’s request all arrangements will be held privately. There will be a Celebration of Life with the family held at 45 Holly Crescent, Apohaqui on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 2pm. Open to all who loved him.
