Stewart Greenwood was born in Chaceley, Gloucestershire, England on July 22, 1918. He was the son of the late Leonard and Ada (Whaley) Greenwood. Stewart graduated grade 8 from the local public school and studied highway engineering through the International Correspondence School. In 1930, at the age of 12, he and his family immigrated to Canada, arriving by ship into Montreal. They settled in Waterborough, where he grew up on St. Ives Farm. He attended the Waterborough School, and helped his father on the farm and with his butchering business. He later worked at the Wiggins Box Factory. Stewart joined the Canadian Army on October 8th, 1940, served in Saint John, Camp Borden and overseas from 1944 with the Canadian Provost Corps, until he was discharged as a Sergeant, February 1946 in Fredericton. He became a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) in 1938, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1947 receiving his Legion Meritorious Service Medal (L.M.S.M.) and holding several positions including: Past President, Poppy chair and Service Officer; he was a charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Grand Washademoak Branch # 60.
