Obituary of Reginald Alban Thorne

It is with heavy hearts the family of Reginald Alban Thorne announces that Reg passed away peacefully at home after a period of failing health on Monday morning, September 30th, 2024, with his family by his side.

Reg was born in Salem, N.B. on September 13th, 1932, to Lee and Josephine (Lackie) Thorne and just recently celebrated his 92nd birthday.

Reg was a special man, special to his family, to his friends, and his business associates. He grew up in the Salem, N.B. (Havelock) area and moved to Hamilton, Ontario in 1956. He was employed by Consolidated Bathurst for 28 years, returning to Petitcodiac in 1983. During these years in Ontario, he owned a number of rental properties in the Hamilton and Grimsby area and continued this practice upon returning to N.B. Reg and Dareth purchased the Greenside Motel in Saint Andrews, N.B. in 1987.  In 1999, they purchased a home which became the Liz-Mic B & B in Saint Andrews and, as they say, " the rest is history". Reg truly enjoyed the tourism industry for the next 25 years and made many friends with both industry members and friends who returned to their establishment year after year. Reg was a good, honest, well thought of businessman. As one fellow tourism operator in Saint Andrews said when notified of his passing, "He was a wonderful man." Reg and Dareth travelled extensively during these years and enjoyed many happy memories of these long winter trips.

Reg met and is survived by his wife, lover and best friend, Dareth Elizabeth Ryder Thorne in 1955, and they married on August 8th, l959, celebrating their 65th Wedding Anniversary this past summer. He is also survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Thorne Boekestyn and her husband Robert of Brockville, Ontario, and his son, Michael Reginald and his wife Rosanne of Saint John, N.B. as well as his pride and joy.... his 2 granddaughters, Jillian Ann Thorne of Halifax, N.S. and Allison Elizabeth Thorne of Vancouver, B.C. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Lee Thorne and his wife Marg of Fergus, Ontario, and Deverne Thorne and his wife Doreen of Petitcodiac, N.B.; his sisters K. Dolores Mills (Morton), Havelock, N.B. and Janet Austin (late Harold), Kingsport, N.S.; his sisters-in-law, Debbie McAllister (late Wayne), Saint John, N.B. and Alda Ryder (late Roy Bryant), Havelock, N.B.; as well  as many nieces, nephews and good friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lee and Josephine Thorne; his son, David, his sister, Winnifred McIntosh (late Roy), Ottawa, Ontario; his brother, Ralph Thorne (late Doreen), Winona/Toronto, Ontario, brothers Bobby and Billy, his sister-in-law, Judy Ryder Jonah (late George), Moncton, N.B., and brother-in-law, Roy Bryant Ryder, Havelock, N.B.

There was no funeral by Reg's request. A private family burial took place at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens, Moncton, N.B.
