Sadden to learn of Doug Passing. We grew up together, attended Trinity together, played hockey together. Our Dads were very close and played on many hockey teams including the 1938 Maritime Intermediate Champions and Sussex Junior Dairy Kings NB finalist hockey. Doug's Dad Lawrence, and My Dad Bud McEwen played in bands as well in the forties along with Sam Stephenson Gary's Dad. They are immortalized on the Mural at Dunster building in Sussex. Taken from a forties photo where they exchange instruments. It is located on the right on the mural. Doug's passing brings back many memories of our youth. Our prayers are with his family.

To Doug’s family members, Doug was a friend to many. He will be missed. He took time with me as a junior golfer on the driving range many moons ago with tips and the best golf advice he gave me was “Just keep playing”. He also liked telling Pleasant Lake fishing jokes and laughs. Very fitting his tribute is at the golf club. RIP Doug

I had first met Doug while working in Sussex many years ago and he always made me smile. Our paths crossed again a while back on Friday nights after work which made for a perfect ending to a work week. Although our lives went in different directions, many miles apart, i thought of him and the time spent in Sussex often. Doug lived life to the fullest and I will always remember something he told myself and a friend on his 60th birthday, “if I had known I was going to live this long, I would have looked after myself a bit better.” I think he did well. He was an icon in Sussex and will be missed.

Doug was a great friend and neighbour on Pitt Street, always on the upside and ready to help with anything., pile kids into the car to go to the drive-in, occasionally sitting around our dining room table just shooting the breeze and keeping the laughter going. Ollie Macs was the best, not to mention MacAfee's Hardware back in the day. There is no doubt he will be missed. My sincere condolences to the familiy.

Mary and Family!
Another great shock for me this week to loose a dear old friend like Doug. We just lost Lester Anderson days ago.A schoolmate of Doug and I from grade 1 to graduation. It's just like loosing family. Lorne and I were great friends and of course your Dad played in a band with my uncle Sam and Bud McEwen immortalized by a Painting on the Dunster's Doughnut building. Doug and I both took our turn carrying the cross in the Anglican church at the open and close of the Sunday service. I can't remember a time before I knew him. His smiling face is burned into my memory for ever!
Please accept our deepest sympathy on your great loss!

Many years ago some of the graduates from SHS would go for a golfing get-together in NB/PEI. After golfing we gathered to tell tall stories (after the xxx store closed) and Doug was the best teller of all (it was all true). I recall Doug approaching me on the second tee wanting to know if I had any ice in my golf bag. Doug was a great guy any top notch golfer. RIP Doug!

When I think about being a kid growing up in Sussex, I think of Doug being part of our family and his bigger than life presence during some defining moments and life lessons. I remember "uncle" Doug going to bat for me and spending the night trying to convince Mom to let me go to my first dance; to being my first (and only) secret Valentine - I was so happy to get that rose in junior high - only to learn decades later that my secret valentine was uncle Doug; to him teaching me how to measure the rum (two, no, three fingers) during card night - which of course came in handy a few years later; and when he sat me down in the living room on Pitt Street for a very serious talk - "just remember if you ever end up in jail you can always count on ol' uncle Douggie to get you out". I never needed to take him up on the offer but I always remembered it. My heart is broken as I'm sure it is for the boys. You will be missed uncle Doug. Now you and Dad can catch up over a good rum and Pepsi. Love Karen

My deepest condolences to the entire MacAfee family.
A good friend of Doug's, Graham Robinson, informed of Doug's passing earlier this week and besides being shocked, some wonderful memories ran through my mind. I was very fortunate to be a member of the 1964 NB/PEI Junior Golf Team with Doug and got to spend some quality time with this man(yes he seemed like a man even at 17).
I got to see him a few times since then and we did keep in touch via social media in addition to Graham updating me on Doug's comings and goings which I always looke forward to hearing.
Doug was always fun to be with and was a true gentleman.
He will be missed by his many friends and family
Rest in peace dear friend....you made the world a better place.

Erin and family,
I first met Doug courtesy of a well placed elbow as he came through my crease in a high school hockey game in the old Kings County Stadium. It was clear to us then that he was major league calibre. His choice of golf confirmed exceptional athletic ability which he enjoyed throughout his life. I am saddened to see him go but his memory will never fade.
Rest in Eternal Peace old friend.

Met Doug for the first time in 81 at the drug store and then later he hired me at Ollie Macs in 83. We were great friends in the 80's 90's and 2000's until I left NB for AB. We enjoyed going to tournaments throughout the Maritimes and seemed as though the golf was secondary and getting together for a drink after the game was our main focus. I had my greatest times with Doug at the golf course. He was so wise, and I would often go to him for advice which he would start off with "Well Thornie..." LOL. RIP Doug, buddy Mike
