Obituary of Pearl Grace Hazen

We wish to note the passing of Pearl Grace Hazen age 91. Born August 7, 1933, in Saint John, Pearl passed away on December 7, 2024 at the Sussex Health Centre.

Pearl went to school in Saint John through to high school. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kings College and a Bachelor of Library Science from the University of Toronto.

Pearl was always conscious of the needs of others and spent her working life in such employment. In her early years she was the director of the local YWCA Day Camp; a childcare provider at Gordon’s Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan; a parish worker at Trinity Anglican Church in Saint John and St. George’s Church in Moncton. After graduating with her Library degree she was a library assistant and librarian for Toronto Public Libraries; a resource officer/librarian for the Community Information Centre of Metropolitan Toronto; a library instructor at N.B. Community College in Woodstock; and a branch manager for Saint John East, Saint John West, and ended her career as the Branch manager for the Sussex Public Library.

Pearl was an active supporter of her local Anglican church, local bible study and fellowship groups, the N.B. Anglican Cursillo, parish lay readers, and Essentials and N.B. Ashram.  She also spent a lot of time connecting with family and friends across the country, tracing genealogy and working on her memory scrapbooks.  In her later years she spent considerable effort on reconciliation as she felt deeply the betrayal of Indigenous people by the Residential School system.

Pearl was predeceased by her parents, Ford and Alice (Vallis) Hazen; her sister, Bernice Camacho and her husband Claude; her brother, Harold Hazen and his wife, Betsy; and her brother, Gordon Hazen and his wife, Gloria. Pearl is survived by her brother, Donald and his wife, Linda, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from where a visitation will take place on Monday, December 16 from 6-8pm. A celebration of Pearl’s life will take place from Trinty Anglican Church (853 Main St, Sussex, NB) on Tuesday, December 17 at 1:00pm.
