Obituary of Helen Hunter
Helen Agnes Martha (Day) was born in Saint John, September 10, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Martin Witfield and Eliza (Sinstadt) Day. Helen and her family moved to Ontario in 1915 for a year before moving back to Saint John. At the close of WWI, they moved to Sussex. She graduated from Sussex High School in 1926 and after graduation, she travelled to Saint John every morning on the milk train to attend Modern Business College. In 1927, Helen began her 26 year career at the Wallace Manufacturing Co. Ltd. where she remained until their closing in 1953. Helen retired from the business world in 1978. She was the Queen of the Kings County Fair in 1927. On October 10, 1930 she married Frank Golding Hunter and their marriage lasted over 29 years until his death in 1959. She enjoyed sports, bridge, needlework and travelling, she was an active member of St. Pauls United Church, where she was a former member of the UCW and the Church Choir, and also enjoyed taking part in their theatrical productions both as an actor and director. In 1930, Helen joined the Prince Edward Temple #22, Pythian Sisters and became the Grand Chief of the Maritime Domain in 1945. She attended Supreme Temple in Boston in 1954 and was a delegate to Supreme Temple in 1964. Helen was Past Supreme Representative (P.S.R.) and Most Excellent Chief (M.E.C.) of Prince Edward Temple, where she filled the office of secretary for 30 years. Mrs. Helen Agnes Martha Hunter of Kiwanis Nursing Home formerly of Main St. Sussex passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on May 20, 2007 at the age of 97. Helen will live in the hearts of her three nieces: Jane Webber and her husband David of Dartmouth, NS, Judy Rubin of Brooklyn, NY, USA, and Betty MacDonald of Antigonish, NS and by her two nephews: Doug Schofield and his wife Barbie of Truro, NS and Father Bobby Day of New Glasgow, NS. Helen was predeceased by her brother, Bob Day and by her two sisters: Gertrude Scholfield and Lillian Rubin; Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176). The Funeral Service will be held from St. Paul's United Church on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 at 2:00pm. The interment will take place at Kirk Hill Cemetery followed by a time of fellowship with the family in the Church Hall.
