Alfie was born in Saint John, NB on August 22, 1921 and was the son of the late Joseph and Annabelle (Maskell) Viger. After growing up in the Coles Island area, Alfie started his career as a long-shoreman in Saint John before heading overseas. After returning from the war he continued on the long-shore, worked as road supervisor and ended his career with 20 years at CP Rail. During all of these years he enjoyed spending time with his extended family on his farm in Coles Island most of all. Alfie is survived by his wife Virginia (Thorne); his son Joseph and his wife Marion Viger of Coles Island; his daughters: Marilyn McGrath and her husband Brad of Encinitas, California and Cheryl Hasson and her husband John of Fredericton; his grandchildren David (Stephanie), Adam (Amelia), Cindi, Tori and Sara; his great grandchildren Madison, Logan, Mateo, Lana and Colton; his brothers George (Elsie) Viger, Freddy (Lynn) Viger; his sisters: Norma Pougnet, Anne Marie (Bob) Teskey, Shirley (John) Holtz and Mary Jo (Wayne) LeClaire; his brother-in-law, Philip Duffley and sister-in-law, Eleanor Viger, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers Charles (Dorothy) Viger, Stanley Viger and his infant brother, Gerard and his sisters Adeleine Duffley and Florence (Bill) Sherriff and brother in law Bob Pougnet. Mr. Alphonsus "Alfie" Viger of Coles Island passed away peacefully with his family at his side at the Oromocto Public Hospital on February 21, 2012 at the age of 90. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506-433-1176), where visitation will be held on Thursday, February 23rd from 6-8pm with a tribute by the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex, Branch #20 beginning at 5:45pm.
