Obituary of Mildred Shannon

Mrs. Mildred Shannon of Waterford passed away on January 21, 2012 at the age of 91. Born in Penobsquis on July 27, 1920, Mildred was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Bernetta (Flemming) McLeod and was the wife of the late Robert Shannon who passed away in 1999. Mildred was born in the brick house in Penobsquis on July 27th, 1920. She was the eldest of six children born to Ken and Bernetta (Fleming) McLeod. Her siblings included Norman, Josephine, Betty, Ella and William. Mildred attended Penobsquis Superior School and graduated from Sussex High School in 1937. She attended Provincial Normal School graduating in 1938. She then taught in local Kings County Schools including South Branch, Apohaqui, Picadilly, Urney and Sussex Elementary. In 1944, she married Bob Shannon and moved to Urney where they raised their four children. Mildred was always very active in her community. She was a founding member of the Sussex Sharing Club, a life member of the UCW, a life member of Rockville WI, a member of School Board district #18, a member of the Waterford Gem - LOL, a member of the Waterford Seniors, and a member of the Retired New Brunswick Teachers Assoc.. Mildred was dedicated to continually learning more. She received her drivers license in 1957 with her first car being a secondhand Austin. She graduated with her Bachelor of Education from University of Moncton. Even in later years, Mildred was keenly interested in world events and politics. She had a terrific memory and could make persuasive and logical arguments with anyone. Mildred will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters: Shirley Adair and her husband Alton of Adair Road and Judy Shannon of Sussex;two sons: Sam Shannon and his wife Edith of Urney, Bob Shannon and his wife Sue of Douglas, NB; two sisters: Ella MacLeod of Penobsquis and Betty O'Laughlin of Sussex; her sisters-in-law: Audrey McLeod of Montreal and Freda Morrow and her husband Vic of Mississauga, ON; nine grandchildren: Sheri Shannon of Fredericton, Sonya Gilks and her husband Trevor of Douglas, Robbie Shannon of Douglas, Amy Butler (and the late Ryan Butler)of Waterloo, ON, Sam Adair of Quispamsis, Joe Adair and his wife Jessica of Sussex, David Adair of Adair Rd., Laura Adair and Jason Daley of Midland and Rebecca Wesko and her husband Chris Colford of Fredericton; seven great grandchildren; Harrison and David Gilks, Alexandra, Ella and Ryland Butler, Austin Adair and Lacey Jude Colford; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mildred is predeceased by two brothers: Norman MacLeod and William McLeod and her sister Josephine Dunfield, her sisters-in-law: Melba MacLeod, Laura Mackenzie and her husband Herman, Austella Robinson and her husband Willard; her brothers-in-law George O'Laughlin, Havie Dunfield and Russell Shannon. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), where visitation will be held on Mon, January 23rd from 2-4 and 6-8pm. A Celebration of Mildred's life will be held from St. Johns United Church on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10:30 am followed by a time of fellowship with the family in the Church Hall.
