Obituary of Charles Wiggins
Noble was born in Young's Cove at the family homestead on December 11, 1926. He was the second eldest of four children. His parents were Charles and Muriel (Northrup) Wiggins.
Noble was married to June Greenwood for 59 years. As June would tell the story, that she met Noble at a dance in Waterborough but she wasn't too impressed with this Wiggins boy. She said he had two left feet! However, he was persistent and kept asking her out. They were married five years later and their family included four children: Valerie, Lorie, Bradley and Brent.
As often was the case, Noble left school at the age of 15 years to go to work and as a young man he worked in a variety of jobs. The two that he spoke about most often were delivering milk in Sussex and working at City Laundry in Saint John. Although Noble's dream of becoming an RCMP officer was unfulfilled because of his height, he went on to work as a lumberman for all of his adult life.
He was active in the community. Over the years he served as school superintendent, church warden, treasurer of the Waterborough Legion Branch 60 and was a founding member and first Chief of Coles Island Volunteer Fire Service. He was part of a group that successfully lobbied for local ambulance service.
Noble has a passion for hockey, he loved everything about it from playing it to watching it and he most definitely loved to debate the finer points of the game. He continued to play hockey with his son Brent in a gentlemen's league well into his 60's. In addition to hockey, he also played softball and from all reports, he had a wicked throwing arm. He also loved playing darts and 45's.
He was a true outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing and was always planning his next trip. Noble was a registered guide after his retirement and made many life long friendships. He especially loved fishing the Dead Waters, the Miramichi and the Little Southwest. Noble often tied his own flies, gifting them to others as well as using them on his own fishing trips. He and June spent many happy times up at the upper camp. His dream was to build a log cabin on the old homestead in Partridge Valley which he did.
There was nothing Noble enjoyed more than throwing one of his famous fish fry's at the lower camp and being surrounded by friends and family. Invitations were sought after by many as these occasions grew in popularity.
As June's health declined, Noble took over much of her care and this is when he really honed his cooking skills. He scanned cooking magazines and tried out new recipes. He boasted how he made 1000 molasses cookies for his grandchildren at Christmas time. He made pickles, jams, Bradley's favorite jelly filled cookies and the infamous "dump" cake to name a few.
In the past couple of years, Molly, his Brittany spaniel became his constant companion and buddy. Molly was a great source of comfort and entertainment. You could usually see her watching the road from the living room window.
Both Noble and June were very proud of their grandchildren and their accomplishments. They attended many hockey, soccer, basketball games and dance recitals. Whatever activity the grandchildren were involved in, they would make an effort to be in attendance.
One of Noble's favorite sayings was that you live your life one day at a time and that is certainly what he did.
Noble was the beloved husband of the late June Beryl (Greenwood) Wiggins who passed away in 2009. He will live on in the hearts of his daughters: Valerie Eden and her husband Tony of Dartmouth, their children: Jennifer Hoar and her husband Dennis of Moncton, Nicholas and Zachary Eden of Dartmouth; and Lorie Setzke and her husband Bob of Darlings Island and their daughter Esmee; his sons: Bradley Wiggins and his wife Elizabeth of Ottawa, their children: Heather Duke and her son Mateo of Whitby, ON, Chantal McKinnon and her husband Sean and their daughter Metta of Ottawa, Chelsey Wiggins of Toronto; and Brent Wiggins and his wife Cheryl of Millcove and their children: Jillian Wiggins of Edmonton and Jordan Wiggins of Mill Cove; his two sisters: Geraldine Shirley of Fredericton, Theresa Hoyt and her husband Tom of Hampton; his sisters-in-law: Lena Greenwood of Waterborough and Vanda White of Saint John; his best friend Molly, as well as several nieces and nephews.
